Aging really is a weird thing.I think a lot about that question, “If you had a time machine, would you go to the past or the future?” I wouldn’t do either, at least not now. I would wait ’til I’m 80, then I’d go back in time and live a day in my now 35-year-old life. I do that now as a little game sometimes. Every once in a while, living life as if I’m the 80-year-old version of me. I think everyone should try it, actually! It’ll get you off your ass when you think you’re tired, it’ll help you not get so upset about random shit that annoys you, and quite frankly, it’ll help you not give a shit about things that don’t actually move the needle on your overall happiness. Whenever I do it, I’m surprised by how simple the activities I choose are. Like going someplace new and eating pancakes, going to a new museum and people watching, or going for a long run in a neighborhood I’ve never really spent time in. Super simple, mundane stuff like that. It makes me feel surprisingly good. I’ve noticed my outlook on life is much more positive in these moments. I think things like, “How lucky am I that I GET to do this?” It’s subtle, but massive.
I think what’s keeping me from using the time machine now is the much bigger question of success. As I get older, I realize more and more that success has nothing to do with being good or bad at something. It doesn’t even have anything to do with talent, really. Everyone’s biggest op is actually just time, and my biggest op is thinking I’m running out of it.
Anyway, today is my birthday. My knees hurt if I sit for too long, and if I dont stretch before I go to bed at night, I wake up with a sore back, because apparently even at rest, in the small hours of the night, I’m still my own worst enemy. If anyone has a good heating pad recommendation, DM your boy. Aging really is a weird thing!
