40 years of The Base Camp Duffel!

For 8 of them I’ve relied on these to move through Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and I’m excited to be packing another duffel now for a new adventure up there in a couple weeks.
I’ll be thinking of you @hilareenelson 💛

It's one of the greatest honors of my life to have partnered with @thenorthface 25 years ago at the inception of #summitseries

#neverstopexploring is literally my DNA and has taken me places like the traditional highest mountains on each continent in a non traditional way, on skis and as a woman. It's stood by my side as I became a mother and remained a professional mountain athlete when that wasn't the norm. It's allowed me the space to open new venues of exploration into advocacy and deep immersion in the Brooks Range of Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and supported me as I move into a deeper exploration of what it all means and why we do it.

We wonder and then we dream, prepare, plan, gather in community, try hard, choose to pick ourselves back up and to support each other, share, shed when necessary and re-invent to a better version. We are resilient.I am resilient.

I've been intentionally absent from this public format in that shed and re-create space though haven't stopped in my relentless pursuit. I've continued, quietly in community, and can honestly say that I'm back. I'm a stronger and better version of myself and yes this is my voice, and my choice to #neverstopexploring

What's your choice?

Hilaree Nelson 1972-2022

Partners are everything. The bigger the objective, the more we require excellence in our partners. The more experience we gain, the more we realize that our choice of partners is about more than their technical skill set. Excellence in the mountains and in life is a blend of compassion with strength, humility with professionalism, humor with courage, leadership with co-operation, and vision with vulnerability.

Hilaree, who died on Manaslu one year ago today after starting a ski descent from the 8163m summit, was a truly excellent partner because she elegantly moved between each of these admirable human qualities while maintaining her true north. She celebrated the raw beauty of each moment and used it as her center during tough times. She held her friendships tightly and cultivated new ones, always uplifting people wherever they were without allowing comparison.

"It doesn't always unfold the way I expect it to," she once said. Hilaree, we admire your courage in stepping into the unknown and leading with compassion. With endless gratitude for sharing your excellent partnership with us.

Hils, you will always be our true north @thenorthface 🖤

Evolving is human nature and also the way we work @thenorthface

When I first wore a Himalayan Suit it quickly became my second skin in the -40 temps of Antarctica’s Vinson Massif in December 2005. I slept with it as a blanket atop my Inferno bag and otherwise wore it every waking minute. Of course I also skied in it! (1st pic)

While making the first female ski descent of Everest the following year (October 2006) I lived in the same ‘Him Suit’ above Camp 2. We were the only team on the mountain, days were short and let’s just say the temps in Antarctica were good training and my Him Suit was critical (2nd pic)

Today I’m excited to share that as humans and as a brand we have evolved to better include females in this high altitude cold environment with the new Women’s Himalayan Suit! (3rd pic)

While I loved and appreciated my Him Suit during these climbing and skiing missions, it wasn’t designed specifically for my body…a strong female body that deserved to be there yet one with different torso and inseam lengths than that suit had. It wasn’t a ‘Her Suit’!

I celebrate the athletes, designers, product experts and the brand who have led the way toward this evolution. Let’s keep going up!

Am I my name? Am I my body? Am I my mind?

These are some of the questions addressed in Rinpoche’s new book, Awakening Dignity. (2nd 📷, yes that’s my copy with notes!)

Phakchok Rinpoche, born 1981 in Kathmandu, Nepal is from a family of famous Tibetan Buddhist masters, 7x re-incarnate, and holder of the Taklung Kagyu lineage.

With a formal education comparable to a PhD in Buddhist philosophy, Rinpoche teaches about dignity as an inherent quality all people possess. He does it with humor, humility and an amazing ability to speak to our human nature, all in excellent English!

It is my honor to call him my friend and teacher. And to share with you all that he will be visiting Jackson, WY next week (March 16) for a public talk. You can buy a ticket at the link in my profile.

Every time Rinpoche has visited Jackson, the event sells out! This will be his first time back in 5 years.

“Compassion is how to begin. Wisdom is how to develop. Dignity is how to be” - Phakchok Rinpoche

On this #internationalwomensday I want to celebrate my daughters, and all the next generation of young women daring greatly and lifting each other up.

They each accomplished their first win at an#ifsajrfreeride comp last weekend, @grandtargheeresort which is something they’ve been hoping for and working towards since they started competing last year🥇

I am the happiest for them not just because of the win , but because of the team spirit and the genuine friendships they’re making with competitors from around the country, lifting each other up.
