🇵🇸I’ve dropped out of Manchester pride 🇵🇸

Those of you that follow me will probably not be surprised that I pulled out of working with Manch pride due to their ties to problematic sponsors.

I’m saying this in a main post to say with my full chest that there is no pride in gene-o-side, and to give some nuance to this discussion which is all over my social media.

First: be aware that companies and collectives working with pride were contracted a year ago (before oct 7th) and may not legally be able to break these contracts without huge consequences for the people working for them. Remember that everything is on a spectrum, that activism doesn’t benefit from destroying your own life (or other lives) for a cause and that sometimes people don’t leave because they can’t.

What does this mean? Still hold people, companies and orgs accountable. Ask them what their stance is and how they are navigating their work and their ethics. And remember that not everything happens as a snap decision. Sometimes there is a whole process that needs to happen to keep people safe.

2nd (you might not like this one ): while queers are pushing for corporate prides to remove problematic sponsors (as we should) there is yet another wave of c*vid ripping through many countries. It is not being talked about enough.

While the ableds are debating how to ethically party, disabled people are being told to “just stay home” and are suffering at a severe lack of support and resources to give us the means to even do that. We have never gotten an accessible pride that we didn’t run ourselves. We do not have systems that care if we live.

So when you say no to gene-o-side… be clear about which ones you’re talking about. Disability is 100% connected to a free Palestine, a free Sudan, a free Congo, a free Tigray, a free world. Include everyone in your activism.

I think next summer will be interesting. If these prides keep their sponsors will you boycott next year?

Anyway, go drink some water, rest when you need to, stay safe and as always, let’s keep going. We have a lot of work to do.

I really enjoyed being a little Halloween drag devil guy.

👀 here’s some Tito Lore 👀

Folks who already know who Tom Lehrer was and who know me will probably have already clocked this, but for those of you that are new to either of us,Tom was a huge influence on me, not just in drag but in all my performance work.

A kind man who played the piano and expressed his rage at the world through comedy and political satire? Be still my heart. 🥹

I, like many millennials, was introduced to him when he had a resurgence in the 90s after the Internet happened and we could watch him on this swanky new website called YouTube. 👴🏻

If you listen to his music, you’ll probably notice 2 things 1. His work is still relevant and funny. 2. He was incredibly progressive for someone who was writing this stuff in the 50s and 60s.

He passed in the summer this year and I felt sadder than I expected even though he got to live to a lovely old age.

I hope he likes my rendition of his song, wherever he is. ❤️

Also shout out to @drag_king_dan_phibian for joyful neurodivergent squeals of recognition and the complimentary drumming. Let’s do that again sometime? 🥰
