This family that doesn’t exist without you. The patience you give freely, the way you holds our boys like it’s the most natural thing in the world…one of it happens without you choosing it, every single day. Watching you be M&M’s mommy is one of the greatest gifts of my life. You give everything…your time, tenderness, your whole heart. And somehow you make it look effortless, though I know it isn’t.

The boys don’t know it yet, but they won the lottery the day they got you as their mom. One of God’s greatest blessings is doing this with you. I know it and I’m grateful for it every day. You don’t do it for the recognition. You do it at 2am when nobody’s watching the boys show you they want to be closer to you by putting their feet on your back as they climb in our bed lol. You do it in the car, at the dinner table, in the middle of a tantrum you didn’t cause. You do it with grace on the hard days and joy on the easy ones.

Our little Black boys are going to grow up and realize what I already know, which is that they were loved loudly and consistently by someone who never stopped showing up. Happy Mother’s Day Brittany. We love you. We cherish you. We’re thankful for you. And you’re REALLY good at this.

One of the lessons that COVID taught me was that you never know when (or if) you’ll see your people again. It was then that I started keeping a camera on me at all times. I mean yes, I always have my phone, but I started carrying a camera everywhere too.

Doing so has put me in position to get some of my favorite images. For instance, last year I was at @rootspicnic and my guy @jemelmcwilliams got me in the pit to photograph Latto. If I didn’t have my camera on me, I wouldn’t have been able to do that.

So yeah, I’m rarely the one in the photos, I’m usually the one creating them. But I like that. I like being able to give the gift of memories to family, close friends, and even strangers.

If you’re nervous before your session, I want you to know: that’s not a problem I need you to fix.

Nervous means this matters to you. Nervous means you haven’t been seen the way you want to be seen yet.

I’ve spent years learning how to work with that energy instead of against it.
