When a wild Atlantic salmon leaves its home river in the UK, it doesn’t just drift out to sea.

It swims over 1,000 miles north into the cold waters off northern Norway, before cutting 1,500 miles west into the open Atlantic waters off Greenland, spending years there growing stronger before taking on the final 2,000-mile journey home, back to the very river where it was born.

That’s a 4,500-mile migratory odyssey for one humble, and now endangered, fish.

Living between fresh and saltwater, salmon are a living archive of our rivers and oceans, a keystone species with lessons for climate resilience, if we let them survive.
