Few months ago, I had the privilege of delivering a lecture to BSC Architecture & Interdisciplinary Studies @bartlett.ais at the Bartlett School of Architecture @thebartlettucl

Sharing my ongoing exploration/interventions of textile in relation to architecture and built environment with such an institution was especially meaningful.

Exactly a week ago there was another fire outbreak in Kantamanto.

This part of the market served as storage - holding hundreds of bales of clothes waiting to be distributed and sold .

僕たちがガーナを訪れた目的のひとつは、ガーナの伝統工芸と現代クラフトの世界をより深く知ることでした。この日、案内してくれた クワミナ @kdboison は、 @therevival.earth の共同創設者で、アクラとクポンで活動する真鍮とガラスの職人たちを紹介してくれました。

彼らの作品はすべて、生活の中で使われてきた真鍮の蛇口やパイプ、ガラス瓶など、埋め立て地から回収した材料をもとに作られています。それらを溶かし、砕き、新たな美しい形へと生まれ変わらせる彼らの創造力と独創性に、僕たちは大きな感銘を受けました。

ガーナでの旅の終盤には、伝統的な織物「ケンテ」で知られる北部の街・タマレへと向かいました。
ここでは、多くの織物コミュニティと出会いました。彼らは、織物を通して人びとに技術や仕事を与え、織り手たちの自立した暮らしを支えています。
工房には「マダム」と呼ばれる母のような存在の “先生” がいて、かつてのマダム自身たちも含めた多くの織り手たちは、暮らしを支える職人技としての織物を教えてくれたマダムに、感謝の言葉を口にしていました。

今後は @Letings とともに、真鍮やガラスのビーズアクセサリー、ガラスのテーブルウェア、そしてケンテ織の布を用いた衣服のカプセルコレクションを通じて、持続可能なものづくりの仕組みを築いていきたいと考えています。

As part of our journey in Ghana, we wanted to deepen our understanding of traditional and contemporary Ghanaian crafts. Kwamena Boison ( @kdboison ), co-founder of @therevival.earth introduced us to brass and glass makers in Accra and Kpong. What they all had in common was that their creations were all made from used materials such as brass taps, pipes and glass bottles collected from the landfills. The creativity and ingenuity of re-purposing by melting and breaking down materials to create beautiful objects was inspiring.

For our final days in Ghana we travelled up to the northern town of Tamale, known for its Kente textile, which is traditional Ghanaian woven fabrics. Here we met with many weaving communities focusing on teaching weaving to empower and create financial independence through craft. The “Madam” of the workshops is a mother like teacher and most of the weavers we met and spoke to, including Madams themselves, would always express their gratitude to their “Madam” teacher for educating them with a craft they can earn a living from.

We aim to develop a sustained business structure, together with @letings_ , making brass and glass beads accessories, table glassware and include Kente textile on our clothing as a collaborative capsule line within all our seasonal collections.

As part of our journey in Ghana, we wanted to deepen our understanding of traditional and contemporary Ghanaian crafts. Kwamena Boison ( @kdboison ), co-founder of @therevival.earth introduced us to brass and glass makers in Accra and Kpong. What they all had in common was that their creations were all made from used materials such as brass taps, pipes and glass bottles collected from the landfills. The creativity and ingenuity of re-purposing by melting and breaking down materials to create beautiful objects was inspiring.

For our final days in Ghana we travelled up to the northern town of Tamale, known for its Kente textile, which is traditional Ghanaian woven fabrics. Here we met with many weaving communities focusing on teaching weaving to empower and create financial independence through craft. The “Madam” of the workshops is a mother like teacher and most of the weavers we met and spoke to, including Madams themselves, would always express their gratitude to their “Madam” teacher for educating them with a craft they can earn a living from.

We aim to develop a sustained business structure, together with @letings_ , making brass and glass beads accessories, table glassware and include Kente textile on our clothing as a collaborative capsule line within all our seasonal collections.

As part of our journey in Ghana, we wanted to deepen our understanding of traditional and contemporary Ghanaian crafts. Kwamena Boison ( @kdboison ), co-founder of @therevival.earth introduced us to brass and glass makers in Accra and Kpong. What they all had in common was that their creations were all made from used materials such as brass taps, pipes and glass bottles collected from the landfills. The creativity and ingenuity of re-purposing by melting and breaking down materials to create beautiful objects was inspiring.

For our final days in Ghana we travelled up to the northern town of Tamale, known for its Kente textile, which is traditional Ghanaian woven fabrics. Here we met with many weaving communities focusing on teaching weaving to empower and create financial independence through craft. The “Madam” of the workshops is a mother like teacher and most of the weavers we met and spoke to, including Madams themselves, would always express their gratitude to their “Madam” teacher for educating them with a craft they can earn a living from.

We aim to develop a sustained business structure, together with @letings_ , making brass and glass beads accessories, table glassware and include Kente textile on our clothing as a collaborative capsule line within all our seasonal collections.

僕たちがガーナを訪れた目的のひとつは、ガーナの伝統工芸と現代クラフトの世界をより深く知ることでした。この日、案内してくれた クワミナ @kdboison は、 @therevival.earth の共同創設者で、アクラとクポンで活動する真鍮とガラスの職人たちを紹介してくれました。

彼らの作品はすべて、生活の中で使われてきた真鍮の蛇口やパイプ、ガラス瓶など、埋め立て地から回収した材料をもとに作られています。それらを溶かし、砕き、新たな美しい形へと生まれ変わらせる彼らの創造力と独創性に、僕たちは大きな感銘を受けました。

ガーナでの旅の終盤には、伝統的な織物「ケンテ」で知られる北部の街・タマレへと向かいました。
ここでは、多くの織物コミュニティと出会いました。彼らは、織物を通して人びとに技術や仕事を与え、織り手たちの自立した暮らしを支えています。
工房には「マダム」と呼ばれる母のような存在の “先生” がいて、かつてのマダム自身たちも含めた多くの織り手たちは、暮らしを支える職人技としての織物を教えてくれたマダムに、感謝の言葉を口にしていました。

On Jan. 2, a fire burned through almost 60% of Kantamanto, possibly the world’s largest second-hand clothes market in Accra, Ghana, where unwanted clothes and stock from the Global North is sold and dumped. 👕 🩲 👠 👖 🇬🇭 🌍

Fires erupt in Kantamanto all the time, but the January fire was the worst in living memory. Many Ghanaian clothes vendors lost everything - thousands of dollars worth of merchandise.

The market exists because of unchecked, unsustainable, fast fashion.

It’s a symbol of “waste colonialism,” where western countries like the UK and the US - as well as global fashion brands - deposit and dispose of unwanted and second-hand clothes as far as west Africa.

The market is also a symbol of the ingenious upcycling and recycling efforts, and entrepreneurial spirit Ghanaians and many others across west Africa. They are the ones chipping away at the titanic-sized “waste colonialism” iceberg that is polluting their countries, and they’ve found a way to make a living for themselves.

The Ghanaian government and NGO’s have promised to support the vendors, but many are struggling to make ends meet.

This is a snapshot of their story.

The first step is to acknowledge the impact of the shock imposed on the most vulnerable and the magnitude of their loss (not just physical space, but mental space too).

Several months ( 2023) before this happened, I had been exploring community through art, trying to find ways to translate and respond to our diverse but shared experiences through textile.

Spending time in Kantamanto before and after the fire, shared energy, felt the loss, fears, and frustrations we feel compelled to sell this work to raise proceeds to support the relief efforts from near and far for the community.

During the 3rd Edition of @britishtextilebiennial , held last October, I had the privilege to join a round table discussion at the @blackburnmuseum on the topic; " Can working with textiles be a regenerative act?" , brilliantly moderated by @josiewarden . A round table discussion which included other artist and designers; @sunnydolat ,thierryoussou , @danayimadondo @soolko_officiel from Sub-Saharan Afrika, some of who's work and contributions towards the global textile space I have admired from a distance.

It was an absolute pleasure to have had this opportunity to share our ( @therevival.earth ) work and how our trajectory aligns with the topic discussed.
