Tangible Media Group @mitmedialab is organizing
Panel P3: From Remote Space to Remote Time
at CHI 2026 in Barcelona 🇪🇸

📅 Tuesday, April 14, 2026
⏰ 14:15 – 15:45 (CEST)

Loss is universal.
We all experience the loss of people, relationships, past selves, and even cultural knowledge.

What can HCI do about loss?
Can we design across time—perhaps even beyond our lifespan?

While HCI has explored grief, memory, digital legacy, and synthetic presence,
these efforts remain fragmented.
This panel brings them together through a shared lens.

✨ Join us for a conversation on designing with absence, memory, and time.

Panelists:
Hiroshi Ishii (MIT Media Lab) @ishii_mit
Hyejun Youn (MIT Media Lab) @jun.youn_
Jie Li (MIT Media Lab / TU Delft) @cake_researcher
Xiao Xiao (Institute for Future Technologies) @_xiaosquared_
Eugene Ch’ng (BNBU)
Jed R. Brubaker (University of Colorado Boulder)
Jayne Wallace (Northumbria University)
Pat Pataranutaporn (MIT Media Lab) @patpat.mit

We’re excited to share our work “PixBric: Precision Morphological Control of Pre-Stretched Fabrics Through Tessellated Primitive Geometries” at the ACM TEI’26 Conference. @tei_conf 🎉 @mitmedialab

Researchers Hye Jun Youn @jun.youn_ , Jun Kyu Choe @juun_q , Sooyeon Ahn, Serena Xin Wei Sara, Marcello Tania @cello.tania , and Hiroshi Ishii @ishii_mit developed a pixel-based design framework that enables precise morphological control of fabrics by 3D printing tessellated primitive geometries onto biaxially pre-stretched textiles.

When the tension is released, these printed units buckle into programmed three-dimensional forms, producing behaviors such as undulations, curling, and bistable snapping.

Special acknowledgment to Yue Yang @yueyang_luna and Yaluo Wang @a03959x.91_15 for their support.💙
