“An Autopsy of Tastes and Values” with the accompanying catalogue of the awarded books 2023
Published in June this year, on the occasion of the 80 years anniversary of The Most Beautiful Swiss Books competition
Conceived, edited and designed in dialogue with Sereina Rothenberger (@hammer__ ) and Tan Wälchli, commissioned and published by @mostbeautifulswissbooks , in collaboration with @keller_samara
Thank you for going 🔭 together
20 years after „Beauty and the Book“ (2004), the anniversary catalogue „An Autopsy of Tastes and Values“ chronicles some of the aesthetic tastes and values that were honored in the course of the decades, and asks what role they might play in the future of the competition. 20 specialists from Switzerland and abroad were invited to engage in five round-table discussions. Each of these was dedicated to a stack of awarded books from eight decades that were selected and grouped so as to present five thematic trajectories.
Photography by @hellomel3000 and @keller_samara
Printing, lithography and binding by @druckerei_odermatt_ag
Available through @hochparterre.ch and @ideabooksnl

20 years after „Beauty and the Book“ (2004), the anniversary catalogue „An Autopsy of Tastes and Values“ chronicles some of the aesthetic tastes and values that were honored in the course of the decades, and asks what role they might play in the future of the competition. 20 specialists from Switzerland and abroad were invited to engage in five round-table discussions. Each of these was dedicated to a stack of awarded books from eight decades that were selected and grouped so as to present five thematic trajectories.

🩷 Do not miss the Graphic Elisava Talks n.3 by Julia Born (@juliaborn)!
On her talk ‘Title of the talk’, Julia Born will explain how her practice encapsulates an inquiry into these formats, challenging them and expanding the notion of design across media and disciplines. Language and its ambiguous qualities are at the center of her project, which she explores through commissioned and independent work—for instance her recent solo show All Capitals at MACRO in Rome, or various collaborations with choreographer Alexandra Bachzetsis.
📅 March 13th, at 19:30h.

Lecture 13 March, 7.30pm
@graphic.elisava Barcelona
The design of a book and of an exhibition are two distinct yet interrelated practices. While both are spatial concepts through which narratives are articulated and displayed, they manifest under different physical and disciplinary conditions. Julia Born’s practice encapsulates an inquiry into these formats, challenging them and expanding the notion of design across media and disciplines. Language and its ambiguous qualities are at the center of her project, which she explores through commissioned and independent work—for instance her recent solo show All Capitals at MACRO in Rome, or various collaborations with choreographer Alexandra Bachzetsis.
