A dead stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) lies suspended within a stroboscopic field. Not buried, not preserved, but held in suspension.
Around it, hands enter and withdraw. Their fingernails are extended with pinecone petals, forming surfaces that are both ornamental and invasive. They touch soil, reposition organic and digital matter. Each gesture is precise, contained, and inconclusive. Nothing resolves. The action circles without arriving.
The beetle does not settle into meaning, nor fully into the image as a body. It resists becoming specimen or symbol, remaining instead a point of friction, something approached, adjusted, but not absorbed.
Movement fractures under a pulsing rhythm. Continuity collapses into intervals; time stalls, thickens, disperses. The viewer is held inside a sequence of imminent actions that never complete.
Within this field, the gesture of looking oscillates between care and control, delicacy and intrusion. The beetle’s armoured, antlered form, coded as force, display, and dominance, is met by movements that are meticulous, adorned, and unstable.

Josué Azor, geboren in Haiti, ist Fotograf und visueller Künstler, dessen Arbeit die Sichtbarkeit queerer Körper, marginalisierter Gemeinschaften und verdrängter Narrative innerhalb der haitianischen Gesellschaft verhandelt. Seit über einem Jahrzehnt dokumentiert er nächtliche Räume, Rituale und intime Begegnungen als Orte von Freiheit, Widerstand und Selbstbehauptung. Vor dem Hintergrund wachsender religiöser und sozialer Repression richtet er den Blick auf Lebensrealitäten, die im öffentlichen Diskurs unsichtbar bleiben. Seine Fotografien entstehen ohne Blitz und setzen auf vorhandenes Licht, Bewegung und Nähe, wodurch eine besondere Intimität und körperliche Präsenz entsteht.

Ein zentraler Fokus seiner Arbeit liegt auf der Darstellung des männlichen Körpers als politischem wie poetischem Terrain, auf dem Fragen von Begehren, Identität und Männlichkeit neu verhandelt werden. An der Schnittstelle von dokumentarischer Praxis und visueller Poesie verbindet Azor persönliche Perspektiven mit kollektiver Erinnerung und formuliert alternative Vorstellungen von Zugehörigkeit und Citizenship in Haiti.

Die Installation in den Schaufenstern im Ochsengässli und der Garage Bar vom 31.12. bis 06.01. jeweils bei Dunkelheit aktiviert und ist von Aussen einsehbar.

Josué Azor, born in Haiti, is a photographer and visual artist whose work engages with the visibility of queer bodies, marginalized communities, and suppressed narratives within Haitian society. For over a decade, he has documented nocturnal spaces, rituals, and intimate encounters as sites of freedom, resistance, and self-assertion. In the context of growing religious and social repression, his images foreground lives that remain largely invisible in public discourse. Working without flash, Azor relies on available light, movement, and proximity to create photographs marked by intimacy and corporeal presence.

En el Black Box, el artista puertorriqueño Jotham Malavé inaugura Hueco en la tierra. Hoyo en el pecho, una exposición que desafía los límites entre lo íntimo y lo social a través de la identidad sexual, humana y animal.

Atelier 2025 - Les Cayes (Sud)

Les inscriptions pour l’atelier de #photographie auront lieu du 3 au 15 février.

Cet atelier se tiendra dans la ville des #Cayes et sera animé par trois photographes du @kolektif2d : @pmfotografi animera les premières séances du 10 au 22 mars, @raypakle prendra le relais du 24 mars au 5 avril, @josueazor clôturera l’atelier du 7 au 19 avril. L’atelier est gratuit.

Modalités d’inscription

Les personnes intéressées doivent :

Avoir une initiation préalable à la photographie, Posséder un appareil photo numérique, Remplir le formulaire d’inscription et un envoyer un portfolio comprenant une petite biographie ainsi que cinq de leurs œuvres (photos) à l’adresse électronique contact@lecentredart.org.
