Every pattern or form(s) are set and practiced before I begin to make the painting (repeater). A memorized movement if you will. The forms repeat as I move along with a dip style pen, focusing on how I move my body and breathe the same way each time, not drawing but feeling. The pen only holds so much ink, and as the color runs out I will switch to the next color. Most repeaters are just two colors, much like the glyph is made of both light marks (little pressure) and dark marks (more pressure). Often times as the ink is running out in the nib — the pen will split leaving negative space within the stem allowing me to fade from one color to the next.

I am interested in the space where the forms are very practiced but not perfect, much like the color pattern seems deliberate but also much beyond myself. Dancing between what is possible and what is memorized form. Being present to make a nice mark and also allowing myself to be comfortable in that slight imperfection. In this same sense the color shifts are not formulated but is left to higher orders, like humidity, pressure and my temperament. Patterns that look like water or leaves rustling emerge- waves emerge. The forms themselves and stylus are based on copperplate calligraphy, also much beyond myslef— a history that is still being worked on. One rooted in natural curves —“forever curves”. Oddly these curves also appear all over the natural world as well.

I wanted to thank MG for coming by in July and filming theseand Andy for making some music that reflects what he played at the opening back in June. That was a good time, and I hope we get to do it again.
