I’m so sad to learn that Gregg Foreman passed away. Gregg looked a lot like this photo when we first met 30 years ago. He initially approached me before our bands played together at Emo’s in Austin to compliment my red thrift shirt. I eventually promised to gift it to him as he mentioned it at every run in we had after that. Our relationship broadened beyond the shirt after I moved to New York in 1998 as Delta 72 was often in town and sometimes crashed at my place. For those of you who weren’t around back then, Gregg was a dynamic frontman with a broad vocabulary of iconic guitar moves.Sometimes he’d get so excited that he’d lose his instrument to clap and dance and lithely climb all over stage scaffolding. We both were up to similar trouble at that point and also bonded over music. Back then his aesthetic was evolving at the pace of the 60s gradually moving into the 70s. So his look naturally progressed from The Small Faces in 1996 to The Faces in 2001. Gregg was also a soul DJ long before I was. He had many legendary nights in Philly throughout the later 90s and influenced an entire generation of DJs and parties there. Sometime after Delta 72 he wound up selling his records, going digital, and moving to Miami where he DJed more contemporary sounds. Thus he was initially been-there-done-that skeptical when he moved to NYC later in the 2000s to find me spinning soul 45s (and not very well - may I add). Gregg however quickly came back around to his former passion, buying vinyl again and becoming a regular presence at the earlier NYNT parties where he also offered me helpful technical pointers. Though Gregg eventually moved to L.A., where he became a top tier sideman who approached each effort with sympathy, passion, and taste, we continued occasionally working together and sometimes going to eat in the years since. Whenever I encountered him, he had multiple musical irons in the fire and new ideas and ambitions. He would’ve accomplished so much more had he stuck around down here with the rest of us. Though Gregg hasn’t been in my day-to-day life for a number of years, he’s so present that I can’t imagine this world without him in it. Godspeed old friend!

For the Spring 2026 installment of Born to Booze, we met up with Suicide’s Martin Rev at 96 Tears - the bar named after ? and the Mysterians’ No. 1 hit which became a fixture in Suicide’s sets for at least a decade.⁠

Also, I’m coming out of hibernation to do a NYNT SOUL CLAP & DANCE-OFF at King Gizzard’s amazing FIELD OF VISION fest in Colorado this summer! They assembled a killer bill, there’s camping and all kinds of nature fun in an idyllic location, and you should def make a weekend getaway of it!

To anybody trying to get in touch, I’m currently in Australia and have fallen way behind on texts and other communication I missed in recent weeks (I also haven’t checked DMs etc forever!).
