Jo Fleming Smith is a multidisciplinary visual artist utilising light, space and form to explore interconnectedness; through time, landscape and community.

For Hidden Door 2026, Jo will present "Connections" - stained fabric intertwined with yarn, creating rope portals between worlds, imprinted with experience, echos of emotion and memory.

ABOUT HIDDEN DOOR

Hidden Door opens up forgotten urban spaces for the public to explore and discover incredible music, art, theatre, film, dance, spoken word and more.

Our 2026 festival will take place from 3rd – 7th June at The Paper Factory in Edinburgh - a huge industrial site transformed for the arts.

Through our festivals we reveal hidden parts of the city and showcase new and emerging artists, musicians, theatre and film makers.

Hidden Door is a volunteer-run charity, with our work funded through ticket sales, sponsorship and fundraising. All money goes straight back into the festival and ensuring all of our creative contributors are fairly paid.

Hidden Door is supported by @creativescots through Multi-Year Funding.

The show brings together artists and makers who use material practice as a way of preserving and inventing stories. Celebrating the imaginative threads between past, present and future, this exhibition explores the enduring power of art to shape how communities remember, imagine and connect. Running 28 March - 30 May, Rozelle Estate, Ayre, K47 4NQ

This week I took part in a crit @yas alongside @victoria_lucas_gallery where we each shared a body of work to gain feedback from the group. This was invaluable to me with many helpful insights shared. My work evolves over time with some clear established strands and some still emerging. Hearing different perspectives gave me so much rich information to take forward as I continue to develop this body of work. Thanks to @tylermellins for organising and facilitating this and giving me the space to test out some new aspects of the work. This will be used going forward for its next iteration in June. More on this soon!

35 x 35cm ink on canvas, Across the Ice. As I move into a bigger urban studio I'm thinking about how the environment around me influences how I work. In the domestic environment of my home studio I'm surrounded by intersecting views out to the horizon. Across hills and tree lines, the light suffused by the green around me. As the light changes throughout the day I photograph it to capture the moment. The recent series has directly responded to this. None are representational, more shifting impressions of places I've been and remember, the light, the space, the season, the time. The scale changes in response to the space. I can already see a change in the new studio @yartspace where it overlooks iconic Brutalist buildings. Interested to see what emerges. #studiowall #inkoncanvas #contemporaryart

150 x 150cm ink on canvas. This reminds me of the Moors at night. Cold, desolate, and peaceful, leaving me with a feeling of being submerged in the landscape. It started with an experimental staining process testing translucence and opacity of pigmented ink and the composition emerged through the layers. It's been sitting for a while so that I can consider where it takes me and I think it needs more time. #studiowall #inkoncanvas #colourfield #abstractlandscape
