Delighted to be included in @womenphotograph’s Year in Pictures 2022, curated by @endiabeal. The BW image and its story are in my feed. I’m looking forward to spending time with the 100 incredible, heart and mind moving images, and getting to know the people who made them.
Thank you for including me. It means so much. Excited to see this collection in print for the Annual (link in bio).

Book launch for “Wāhine Inside: Poetry and prose from wāhine in Christchurch Women’s Prison“. 27 March, 2026. Ellen Melville Centre, Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland.
These images accompany article by Claire Mabey at The Spinoff “The ‘lifesaving’ creative writing programme transforming prisoners into poets”.
“Both [Deborah] Smith and AW are passionate about the necessity of programmes like Te Kāhui. Far from viewing creative arts and education as “nice-to-haves” they see them as essential to survival both inside prison and out. Both have gone on to study at tertiary level and credit the work they did in prison, as well as the ongoing support of their tutors and Te Kāhui staff, with helping their reintegration and continuing explorations of themselves as artists and creatives and people. “This programme saved me from myself. Te Kāhui gives you options,” said AW.
But as of June 2026, Te Kāhui will be going on indefinite hiatus. “A combination of factors, including a constrained funding ecosystem exacerbated by significant changes in public funding to arts and culture budgets, has created difficulties in our sustainability,” reads the statement on their website. Homeground, an organisation facilitating creative arts programmes for women in the justice system, also went on hiatus in November 2025, with inadequate resourcing as one reason for the pause.“

In this episode of ‘Journey of Scent’ perfumer Nathan Taare / @huttlyfe is tasked by Whitney Steel / @perfumedwhitney to create a bespoke scent for artist Te Rongo Kirkwood / @te_rongo_kirkwood - who is a master at working with glass.
Nathan’s process includes a bespoke bottle design. But how do you gift a glass bottle to a an artist who works with glass? No pressure.
In the end Nathan chose to source one, the best vintage glass bottle he could find. This was the result.
Here is photographer Jinki Cambronero / @jinkic capturing the incredible piece.
Find out if Te Rongo appreciated this decision in Episode 1 available now on rnz.co.nz/video

Piggies at Paws Awhile Animal Sanctuary. Goldie, Bert and Nellie. They were only little when I started visiting in early 2019. Now they’re so big, that when they want to lie down, it’s more of a flop. A big, heavy, flop. They love to bask in the sun and are enthusiastic about belly rubs.
In New Zealand, conditions for mother pigs were going to improve. However, the current government wants to make them worse. Public submissions are open to oppose the bill that doubles down on the cruelty, and close tomorrow, 23 October.
Please have a look at the latest @safenewzealand post for details. And my stories for a link to the submission page, if you have capacity — it’s pretty quick. Two questions: “comments” and “recommendations”. DM me if you want any ideas on what to write.

Metro magazine’s City Life photo series is a finalist in tonight’s Best Awards.
The first time I was asked to shoot City Life, I was on a small boat, below deck. Recovering from seasickness, after a morning of chasing big yachts for photographs. I was horribly ill, and nearly said no.
I’m so glad I said yes. 4.5 years and x17 City Lifes later, it’s great to see some of this work collated for Best. Thank you Kelvin for deciding to enter it. And to the team at Metro, for entrusting me with this for so long. I’ve loved the adventures, the challenges, and this wonderful way of getting to know Auckland better. All while being a part of the beautiful Metro team. A career highlight.
p.s. Metro magazine’s redesign is in four categories for the awards. An epic project, for a beloved cultural insitutiton.

Atamira Dance Company. Kia Pohewatia with Rachel Ruckstuhl-Mann. In-progress showing at @corbanestate as part of @koangafestival at @tepoutheatre. Sunday, 15 September 2025.
Always a joy, to watch how work unfolds. With freedom and feel in the organic. Moved by the intentional, and intuitive connection of dancers, spirit and environment. A chance to slow down, and be present. To connect with others, and layered meaning. With sound by pūoro artist Salvador Brown.
Was glad to have a chance to chat with choreographer Rachel Ruckstuhl-Mann. To hear about their process that is guided by the spaces they find themselves in. Collaborative, explorative, and safe.
There’s another showing on this Saturday, with Samara Reweti, 3 — 4.30pm at Te Pou, Henderson, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Tickets via Te Pou’s website.
Always wonderful to share space with Atamira Dance Company.
