This is a @donovanxramsey appreciation post. When Crack Was King blew my mind when I read it—at a sentence level (there isn’t a sentence in the book that isn’t swinging for the fences), at a moral level, at a human level. Though we had never met before IRL, when I found out what city he was in I immediately planned a tour stop in Atlanta, and when I asked he immediately said yes. Thank you to @charisbooksandmore for not just Donovan and me, but @jbarberstudio who illustrated my cover. I really appreciated getting to be with two Black men who make books and art — it made my soul happy in a deep, profound, joyous way to be with my brilliant brothers 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Something truly miraculous happened last night: Though we had never met nor even communicated, artist Jamal Barber came to Charis Books in Atlanta and gifted me a print of his magisterial work “The Overseer Class.” I am beyond words and will let the art and our smiles explain how loved I felt.@jbarberstudio @amistadbooks @charisbooksandmore
My birthday was yesterday but what I really celebrated was my boy Avery being CTSA Middle school student of the year for the district! My daughter is graduating this week too. What makes me happy is my kids, my family and my art. @jcbbarber gave our boy her science brain and I helped make him handsome and funny 😂
46 isn’t too bad so far.

I got to go back to @gsu_artdesign this semester to teach a bunch of folks about drawing the human body. It was a great group. I got to see them try, get pushed a little, try again, get pushed some more and finally turn the corner at the end on the final assignments. My yelling and making jokes probably didn’t help 🤣🤣 but they got it. I teach the passion to be an artist not just academic stuff. It feels good to see them start to settle in and really embrace being an artist. I’m sure you’ll see me talking about them again one day.Congrats to them on a good semester

"BEYOND THE SURFACE:
EXPLORING VISIBILITY IN PRINT"
I want to thank my incredible talented family of printmakers, @legacyprintcouncil
Featured Artists: Chole Alexander, Rabea Ballin, Jamaal Barber, Maurice Evans, Ann Johnson, Grace Kisa, Delita Martin, Steve Prince, Rashaun Rucker, Jess Sabogal, and Shanna Stauss.
I also want to send a huge thank you to my gallery family @galeriemyrtis , thank you for all the hard work and supporting my vision!
About the show:
May 2 - July 11, 2026, at 2224 N Charles St, Baltimore, MD. Gallery hours: Tuesday – Saturday by appointment, 2:00 – 6:00 pm.
"In an era defined by constant image circulation and the immediacy of being seen, Beyond the Surface: Exploring Visibility in Print brings together eleven printmakers whose practices interrogate what it means to appear, to be recognized, and to remain unseen. Rooted in the material and conceptual language of printmaking, this exhibition examines visibility not as a fixed condition, but as a layered and shifting experience, one that is shaped by history, identity, and power.
Printmaking, at its core, is an act of revelation. It is the transfer of mark to surface, the emergence of image through pressure, repetition, and time. Across this exhibition, artists employ a range of techniques—relief, lithography, screen printing, monotype, and hybrid processes—to emphasize the physicality of making as a metaphor for visibility itself. Layers are built, obscured, and reconfigured; textures hold traces of what came before; and surfaces become sites where presence and absence coexist.
Together, the eleven artists in this exhibition invite viewers to move beyond surface readings and into deeper engagement. They ask us to consider not only what is visible, but how we see, who is granted recognition, and what remains overlooked. Through the enduring and tactile language of printmaking, Beyond the Surface becomes both a space of reflection and a call to awareness, challenging us to reconsider our role as observers and participants in the ongoing act of making meaning visible.” – Delita Martin

Nothing compares to seeing it all come together ✨
Jamaal Barber (@jbarberstudio) illustrated our Folio book of The Underground Railroad two years ago. This was his first time seeing the final book with all his artwork inside.
A glimpse into how every Folio book is made, with the right artist for every story.

Next Saturday (April 11) we are steamroller printing woodblocks for fun! Print Big! is back at @atl_printmakers 11am-4pm. Teams from Georgia State, Kennesaw State, West Georgia University, Oglethorpe Univeristy, Lovett School and UGA will be there print large scale blocks. Get a souvenir print and get some work from the artist market. It’s a good time. Come hang out with us.
I got asked to participate in a print portfolio asking about what we feel about America after 250 years. I thought about George Stinney Jr executed by the state of South Carolina at 14 years old (the youngest person ever executed in America). His conviction was vacated in 2014saying that he hadn’t received a fair trial. In the photo his prison number was 260.
That’s how I feel about America. 250 and 260. A debt that can never truly be repaid. A lingering testimony of Blackness but not justice.
I can’t wait to see what other people came up with.

Art projects are like a ritual. Even trimming paper down to the right size is about the beginning of making something. You gotta love every part of the process. #studio #printmaking #paper #art
