“When it’s all over for me,” Betty Carter once said, “I would like it said that Betty Carter was not just a singer, but a jazz musician and a singer.” No singer ever grasped the rhythm and harmonic intricacies of bebop more fully; none was more vocally adventurous or more musically sophisticated.

A popular 1961 duet recording, “Ray Charles and Betty Carter,” first made her famous but she never wavered in her devotion to jazz. “Betty wasn’t interested in getting a hit record,” her longtime pianist John Hicks recalled. “She was ... faithful to the traditions of the music for the sake of [being] the best you can possibly be.” When record companies lost interest in her during the late 1960’s, she formed her own company, Bet-Car Records, and kept it going for eighteen years.

She recruited promising young musicians for her trios and passed on what she called the “secrets” of the music to two generations of young musicians including Cyrus Chestnut, Benny Green, Curtis Lundy, Mulgrew Miller, Lewis Nash and Jackie Terrason. “You can do anything you want if you work hard,” Betty Carter liked to tell her musicians. “Nothing that’s going to send you to your grave with a smile on your face comes easy ... It’s about doing what you love.”

Today would mark the 97th birthday of Betty Carter! We are honored to celebrate this day.

Last night in Dizzy’s Club, we celebrated the album release of “Monk con Clave” by Carlos Henriquez, bassist of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. This album, featuring the Carlos Henriquez Big Band, roots the large-ensemble recording in Henriquez’s long relationship with the work of Thelonious Monk and the cultural history of San Juan Hill.

He brings together a multigenerational band drawn from members of the JLCO and its extended community, including percussionist Pedrito Martínez, trumpeter Mike Rodriguez, pianists Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Osmany Paredes, and Robert Rodriguez, vocalist Anthony Almonte, and flutist and vocalist Jeremy Bosch. The project places Monk’s compositions beside original works shaped by Bronx memory and Nuyorican identity.
