My pitch for TMNT was always to do a “getting the band back together” set-up, where the brothers have gone their separate ways: Leo on a spiritual quest, Mikey as a TV star, Donnie in some seriously dire straits, and Raph in prison. I knew right away I wanted to lead with Raph, to help set the tone for the new series, which was a bit darker and grimier and more 80s Frank Miller.

Before BUG WARS, I traveled the Hyborian Age with artist Mahmud Asrar and colorist Matt Wilson. KING CONAN took the King of Aquilonia to the ends of the known world where he faced the wizard Thoth Amon, who fancied himself Conan’s greatest enemy, even if Conan had never heard of him. KING CONAN was the second of three Conan stories I’ve written, after “The Life and Death of Conan” in CONAN THE BARBARIAN from Marvel, and preceding “Conan the Ensorcelled” in THE SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN from Titan. And it’s one of many kingly stories I’ve told over the years, alongside KING THOR, PUNISHER: KING OF KILLERS, NAMOR: LAST KING OF ATLANTIS and the current King Shazam storyline in ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN.

Marvel’s SECRET WARS event in 2015 was a blast, in part because it afforded everybody there the chance to explore all sorts of different off-beat series that normally would’ve been tough to get approved. I wrote THORS, which was a cop drama, my ode to “Homicide: Life on the Street,” but with magic hammers. And I got to do a full-on fantasy series, WEIRDWORLD, with art by the incomparable Mike Del Mundo, featuring all sorts of obscure Marvel sword and sorcery characters, including Arkon of Polemachus (with his quiver of thunderbolts), Skull the Slayer, and a few of the crew from THE SAGA OF CRYSTAR, CRYSTAL WARRIOR, which had its own comic and toy line back in the 80s.

Well, issue #1 of the new series, THE COMING OF THE WARDOOM, is infested with cockroaches. In issue #2, you meet the Underbugs and other denizens of the Ash Lands. After that, we’ll visit more parts of the Yard that haven’t yet been unexplored, so who knows what sort of monsters might be waiting there.
