What the Body Remembers

Chris Millsapp positions the Black male body as both subject and repositoryβholding the residual weight of history, labor, and surveillance within a contemporary fine art framework. The burden carried by the figure operates as an embodiment of inherited circumstance, while bells affixed to the body reference systems that historically monitored and constrained Black movement. Captured in a moment of poised imbalance, the figure reflects the tension between advancement and instability that has long shaped Black masculinity. Through a restrained palette and minimal environment, the image resists spectacle, inviting reflection on endurance, agency, and the quiet persistence of presence.
