Jamie Pugh
It gives me great pleasure to announce that Dr Jamie Pugh is now a mentor within the Performance Nutrition Network.
Jamie is a Senior Lecturer in Sports Physiology and Metabolism at Liverpool John Moores University @ljmusportsci and founder of EXO Analytics @exo.analytics . His research focuses on gut health, carbohydrate metabolism, and endurance performance.

Last month he was a guest in our regular monthly webinars. Here are some notes from that session.
🏃♂️ Crazy to think how many elite runners still don't know the evidence-based guidelines OR how much they can actually tolerate
📊 Data shows 2-3% improvement in running economy with 120g carbs per hour (equivalent to wearing super shoes!)
🥴 Stomach fullness with liquids is the main cause of gut issues at 120g/hour for elite runners
If you want to watch his recording back, it's inside the community under webinar replays.

Jamie is "keen to get involved with the community and healthy discussions" 💬
Like our other mentors, Jamie will be on hand to provide expert insight on:
- Performance nutrition strategies
- Gut health and GI management
- Endurance fuelling protocols
- Personalised carb testing
Available in the community forums and via DMs 📩

New episode: Jamie Pugh, co-founder of EXO Analytics and lecturer at LJMU, breaks down how much of the carbs you take in during exercise your body actually uses — and why that matters for training and race day.
• What EXO measures and how (stable-isotope breath testing + indirect calorimetry)
• Why optimal intake varies widely (often ~60–120 g/h)
• Gut training: helpful for tolerance, unclear for utilization

We've been working hard over the last few months to get @exo.analytics up and off the ground.
This is a new venture for me. Wish us luck, follow us on socials, and ask questions.
I've been researching and working with endurance athletes for the last 10 years looking at all aspects of the gastrointestinal tract.
Part of the idea behind @exo.analytics came from the huge number of elite athletes that wanted to head into the lab, once they knew that there was a way to test just how much carbohydrate they could use during exercise. I've been lucky enough to test Olympic and world champions, Team GB athletes, and many more.
But now this type of testing is accessible to everyone. Whether it is through our partner labs or the home test we have developed, we can help you work out how to fuel during your next ride or run.

Marathons, Ironman triathlon, 24 hour ultras, 100km road ultramarathon, Badwater 135....
Just some of the races that yesterday's 9 athletes have taken part in or are preparing for.
Each of them knows the importance of getting their fuelling right. Some of them think they have under-fuelled in the past. A couple of them definitely know they've overdone it 💩
We managed to test all of them in just a few hours thanks to our simple and efficient testing set up and protocol.
Stay tuned for the results. We'll be breaking down the differences between them when it comes to how much carbohydrate they can use during exercise.

First week after surgery
Small shuffles around the living room. Easy cycling in my slippers. A few naps. Eating well - with a decent amount of fiber to keep things moving while the stomach is still sore.
Generally trying to keep things easy and not rush the recovery
