SUMMER BAJA

When I was in High School, there was only one thing we cared about, and that was the Grateful Dead. The Grateful Dead was our music, our community, and our bond to each other. My very first business was making Grateful Dead bootleg baseball hats and selling them in the parking lot of the shows.

35 years later I received a call from the manager in our Boston store staying that Bob Weir came into the store and wanted me to call him. It took me a few days to gather the courage to return the call. He answered and I said, “Mr Weir?” His response was, “Call me Bobby”. I took a deep breath and then we just jumped right into it. He then came to my office in LA to discuss all of the ideas that he had for a collaboration with us and The Dead. We connected immediately like two old friends who had known each other forever. He opened the door and together we went wild. We spent years together perfecting the beloved serape that he wanted for every occasion, which eventually led to us creating a serape for him to wear to accept the Kennedy Center Honors, which he so richly deserved.

Our collaboration was a process of me initiating an idea and Bobby taking it to the next level. I’d create a concept, and he would make it his own.

I am so grateful to have experienced Bob’s greatness firsthand and to be able to call him my friend.

My heart goes out to his wonderful family Natascha, Chloe, and Monet, and to his incredible team that was one true family, reflective of the person he was. For me, it is life coming full circle and I will always take his advice to let the best ideas form around each other so that they are all dancing around the same May Pole.
