Best beginner island thru-hike 👉 GR131 Tenerife 🇪🇸🇮🇨 85 km ~ 53 miles | 5 days | all info 👇
The GR131 @_thru_hiking trail on Tenerife is one of the most beautiful ways to see this amazing Canary Island. The trail takes you through ancient pine forests, and then up to the high desert with views of El Teide, the island’s active volcano🌋 before taking you down near the coast on trails in tropical ravines.
Full disclosure: while this is a good trail for beginner long-distance hikers, that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily easy. You’ll need to carry 3-4 liters of water and a full pack through high heat in the desert and forest. So just be sure to prepare well and you’ll have a good time!
This trail is one of the seven GR131 island trails 🙏 (you can find the other trails on La Gomera, Gran Canaria, El Hierro, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Palma). The paths on Tenerife are well-maintained and signposted, and not too technical or steep. Just carry enough water and figure out your accommodations ahead of time, which will be different each night (camping, bivouac, hotels…) ⛺️
Important: wild camping is illegal, so you’ll need to stay at the designated campsites and the bivouac spot at Guajara.
Stages 👇
1️⃣ La Esperanza – La Caldera campsite, 30.5 km
2️⃣ La Caldera – El Portillo (taxi to hotel), 13 km
3️⃣ El Portillo – Guajara bivouac, 13 km
4️⃣ Guajara bivouac – Vilaflor (hotel), 11 km
5️⃣ Vilaflor – Arona, 17.5 km
Hiking on Tenerife is a fantastic experience and something we recommend to any thru-hiker who wants an island and desert escape in autumn / winter ☀️

GR131 Tenerife 🇪🇸🇮🇨 85 km ~ 53 miles | 5 days | Stages & info 👇
The GR131 is a thru-hike across all of the Canary Islands, and we hiked the Tenerife section in February to trade the cold winter for a sunny one ☀️ The trail is a great mix of forest, desert, volcanoes, and mountains as you explore this famous island.
The Tenerife section of the GR131 is technically easier than on the other islands, but accommodations are still tricky to find. Because wild camping is illegal on the Canary Islands, you will need to cobble together your lodgings as a mix of hotels and permitted bivouacking and campsites 🏕️ On stage 2, you will need to order a taxi to pick you up and drop you at the trailhead and the other stages will end near a hotel or at a bivouac spot 😊
Be sure to pack enough layers for this one! While it can be very hot down by the coast, as you make your way higher toward El Teide, the days will get cooler, and you’ll want gloves and a hat for the mornings ❄️ It snowed on the volcano when we were there in February!
Stages 👇
1️⃣ La Esperanza – La Caldera campsite, 30.5 km
2️⃣ La Caldera – El Portillo, 13 km
3️⃣ El Portillo – Guajara bivouac, 13 km
4️⃣ Guajara bivouac – Vilaflor, 11 km
5️⃣ Vilaflor – Arona, 17.5 km
P.S. It is possible to climb El Teide, the volcano on Tenerife 🌋 However, be aware that you will need permits and proper gear like microspikes. There is a ranger station about 5 km up the mountain that will check if you are prepared.
