"The look of #HeatedRivalry really came out of my love of maximalist lighting and colour, paired with a constant desire for naturalism,” says #cinematographer @jacksonparrell about his work on the breakout series. ❤️‍🔥🏒 “I wanted the show to feel full-fat, rich, contrasty, and cinematic, but still relatable – something that could defy expectations around what on-screen adaptations of these stories usually look like. I was also really aware that a lot of our audience would be longtime fans of the books, coming in with very specific images already living in their heads. A reader’s imagination is a powerful thing, so we needed to give them something beautiful to compete with that. Big thank you to our gaffer Loreen Ruddock and her entire team for their work here.

The camera work was always a dialogue between our operators @jamesporemba and @ashleyirisgill, our #director @jacob.tierney, our actors, and the scripts themselves. Intimacy is a huge part of the show, and it was important to me that the camera felt complicit and engaged — not standing back, but participating in the desire of the characters and the viewer. Our operators were absolutely essential in making that work, as was our intimacy coordinator @chala_hunter.

Panavision has been a big part of my career from the beginning, and I’ve worked with the team at Panavision Toronto on all my long-format projects. Once we knew we were committed to an #anamorphic deliverable, the #TSeries felt like the obvious choice. They’ve got a classic Panavision anamorphic feel, but with the practicality and reliability of a modern lens, which is huge on a fast-paced episodic schedule. I loved the look, my ACs loved the mechanics, and the close focus was awesome for the intimacy scenes.

Working with Jacob was honestly a dream. He’s collaborative and decisive, and just a really good person to be on set with. The creative process was very vertically integrated — Jacob was the writer, director, and showrunner — which created a lot of clarity and trust across the entire set. Everyone felt genuinely enabled to do their best work."

Some of my favourite frames from episode 3. This episode was a lot of fun to shoot. Highlights included 900mm lenses, many layers of CTB, and the incredibly talented @nadinebhabs @francoisarnaud and @robsgk @heatedrivalrytv@heatedrivalryupdates @heatedrivalrycrave

The first two episodes of Heated Rivalry are out and I’m so excited. Shooting this show was an absolute dream—more on that soon. For now though here are some of my favourite screengrabs from Episodes 1 and 2.
Streaming now on Crave and HBO Max.
