The next #iusphb staff spotlight is Amy Shamanov! She is the assistant director of graduate degree programs and has been with SPH-B since 2018.
Shamanov finds that everyone she works with is welcoming, respectful, and cares about improving society and striving for equity. Being in a student support role, she appreciates how well the faculty work with staff to support students.
As a current hobby, Shamanov has been learning about creatures that are not considered “cute and cuddly,” such as insects. She views them as equally important to fluffy animals because she cherishes all wildlife

"Hoosier" is just another word for "resilient."
Meet two students who navigated tough challenges on their way to commencement:
Darby Williams found a support system from the faculty at the Eskenazi School of Art (@iuartanddesign) and Architecture that helped her navigate a cancer battle and discover healing through her lens.
Tyler Morris transformed social anxiety into a passion for public health advocacy as a student leader at the School of Public Health-Bloomington (@iusphb).
Their stories remind us that dreams become realities with a lot of tenacity and a little support from the Hoosier community.

Associate Professor Evan Jordan in the Department of Health & Wellness Design helped launch the WithYou PINK app that provides real-time, proven therapeutic tools to support breast cancer survivors, available now for free download for both Apple and Android smartphones.
In 2022, Jordan partnered with Associate Professor Shelley Johns in the IU School of Medicine to co-design the app with breast cancer survivors with the help of an Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences (CSTI) grant. Together with newly appointed CEO Jeri Judkins, they have built WithYou Therapeutics with investment from Boomerang Ventures, an Indianapolis-based combination studio and venture fund that supports early-stage health care innovators.
“Shelley, Evan, and their team did a great job facilitating the discussions and incorporating our feedback into the design of the app,” says Nicole Paulk, one of the breast cancer survivors who helped in the co-design process. “The final product is very user-friendly and visually appealing.”

#iusphb is proud to spotlight graduate Jules Erwin. In 2001 and 2015, Erwin received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, respectively, from SPH-B in Outdoor Recreation and Resource Management. In addition to learning about managing resources, she focused on natural history interpretation and environmental education.
Erwin feels extremely lucky to have wonderful professors in her undergraduate courses who took an individual interest in their students. She credits former Indiana University Bloomington professors Doug Knapp and Lois Silverman for leaving a major impression on her.
During her undergraduate career, there were abundant opportunities outside of class. She was an officer of the Undergrad Rec Society, attended workshops, was involved in the Environmental Education Association of Indiana as a board member, and worked at camps and parks. She also met two classmates with whom she later worked at Holiday Park in Indianapolis. In graduate school, she taught classes and was the event director for the Great Lakes Park Training Institute for four years.
Erwin believes that working in public health is incredibly rewarding, especially on the recreational side. She “wouldn’t trade it for the world” and advises anyone looking to work in public health to find the place where one can make the biggest impact on others. Erwin suggests, “take advantage of every workshop, grant, volunteer opportunity, and board position you can. You will keep learning that way!”
Currently, Erwin volunteers to lead hikes, engages in historical interpretation, creates community programs, and works with youth groups. She also teaches the Wildflowers and Wild Edibles course at SPH-B, where she loves sharing her passion with students. Around Bloomington, she is an avid book lover and will be working as the programming events director for the soon-to-open Towaki Brewing Company.
