I almost forgot to post the results of this years Met Gala! The fundraiser has increasingly risen to become the Super Bowl of fashion and with it the additional pressure of being a cultural flashpoint for politics and art. This year served as one of the most contentious in recent years with Jeff and Lauren Bezos serving as the event’s main benefactors and many online criticized their involvement, dubbing it the billionaires’ ball. Counter protest events were held around NYC, featuring a ball with models who work in inhumane conditions at Amazon itself while wearing sustainable clothing. Additionally, Bezos sent police to arrest Amazon labor union organizer Chris Smalls directly outside the event. And Jennifer Lewis lambasted celebrities who attended the event despite a backdrop of economic turmoil and global wars. Despite the “success” of the fundraiser it had many asking do we really need all this capitalism in our art??? Which led to an interesting judging experience with many underwhelmed at celebrities’ creativity despite having all the resources at their fingertips. Most notably with Lauren Sánchez Bezos voted as worst dressed. I’m sure Jeff would have been on there too had he been photographed on the carpet.
