This project started during the intense, record-breaking snowstorms of Feb. 2025 in Montreal. Being snowed in might create the perfect scenario to stay inside and sit in a studio filled with warm machines, but @elementkuuda kept his promise of visiting the St. Lawrence River almost daily, to say hi to his usual sit-and-stare summer spots. During these promenades, the influence of the quiet and peculiar sonority of winter led to sessions of field recording, capturing the subtle void of the cold wind and the crisp sounds of water caught in a struggle between solid and liquid states. This soundscape became the foundation of the album, before his usual arsenal of synthesizers and DIY modules joined in. The result is a well-defined album, echoing some of his previous work on Maluugahn or Harbour of the North Wind, but under a somewhat more minimalistic, quieter vision. [...]

Big thanks to the incredible @pulsatilla.vulvaris for her subtle but crucial flute overdubs on 'The Lion in the Water' -one of my favorite tracks from the new Mount Maxwell LP. In addition to performing at Mutek and releasing a killer solo album on Montreal's @isohyet_ label, Lisa is also part of @shygirlscollective (check them out on Bandcamp!). Just a fantastic musician and person, and I'm hugely grateful to her for the collaboration. 🤼‍♂️🙏

For his debut album, @blaireau.blaireau captured carefully crafted improvisations and compositions made of thoughtful frequencies and honest emotions. In the summer of 2022, I reached a degree of anxiety I had never experienced before. I was trying to finish my master’s thesis on time, but a latent state of panic in the back of my mind made it very difficult. I had a few hypochondriac episodes during that period, and I was increasingly overcome by a fear of death. At some point, it became the first thing I thought about when I woke up. The processes of getting better and bringing this album to life were very much tied together. I spent a year going to the studio every day, trying to find a thread. I wanted a creative practice that didn’t involve too much intellectualization. Before starting the day, I began doing short improvisations on the synthesizer, just to get in the mood. The songs on the album appeared during those moments, almost by themselves, while I was looking elsewhere. I realized that in that place of intuition, free from any kind of pressure, I was already holding the thread effortlessly. - Gabriel Lavoie Viau

Gabriel Lavoie Viau lives in Montreal. In recent years, he has worked in digital art studios and submitted a research-creation thesis on sound installations. He has been involved with music and composition since childhood. Soli Juno Gloria is his first solo album.
