In the Moment with Instax: Kerri DuPreez 3/3
Kerri DuPreez joins Instax South Africa to chat about her amazing job as a private wildlife guide, how she uses the Instax Link Wide for her trips, and some of her favourite wildlife encounters.
If you had to pick your most special moment as a wildlife guide, what would it be?
π£ One of my favourite sightings or experiences out in the bush has got to be some of my experiences I've had in West Africa. It was my first time seeing forest elephants and bongo antelope, very rare and elusive creatures. I actually got a painting of a special sightings I've had of bongo up in my lounge that was done by an artist in Hoedspruit, so this has to be at the top of my list of all my lifetime of sightings.
You've been to a number of countries in Africa, is there still a country/place you would like to visit?
π£ I'm originally from Zimbabwe and I have travelled and worked in a lot of Africa, mostly southern African countries as well as Congo Brazzaville and the Central African Republic. It's difficult to say which country I'd still like to travel to since there are still many that I would love to visit. I do have a fascination for West Africa, so of course I would still like to make my way to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Rwanda and Ivory Coast.

Spending time in the bush is amazing, but you must have had a few hair-raising incidents. Can you share a close call or two?
π£ I have had quite a few hair-raising encounters, mostly with elephants, especially forest elephants. Forest elephants are known for being quite unpredictable and unreasonable creatures!
I just got back from a trip from Mana Pools in Zimbabwe, and there are a lot of very unhappy elephants in that region too. So the most hair-raising moments I've had were close encounters with elephants where I did wonder if this might be my last few moments.
You've recently started using the Instax Link Wide smartphone printer, please tell us more about the experience.
π£ The Instax Link Wide has been perfect to take with me on my camping adventures and my guiding trips. I travel a lot and guide throughout Southern Africa as well as West Africa, and having this little portable printer by my side has been absolutely a godsend.
I have been taking the printer with me on my last few safaris, and I love being able to print special moments captured with my guests and give it to them as a souvenir. I also print special wildlife sightings or just beautiful landscapes that I would like to remember for myself β special moments in time.
I know nowadays we do keep a lot of photos and videos on our phones, but sometimes having a printed photo is a nice little memento.

Hi Kerri, welcome to In the Moment with Instax! You have such a fascinating job, can you tell us how you became a private wildlife guide?
π£ I have pretty much grown up in the bush my whole life, so guiding is something that came naturally to me. I actually originally studied hospitality but decided this wasn't quite for me; I took a gap six months, did a guiding course and have never really looked back since then.
What's the best part of your job?
π£ It would most probably have to be sharing my love and passion for wildlife with foreigners from overseas. It's something I really did struggle with during COVID when there were no guests to share all of these incredible wildlife experiences with.
Where's your favourite place to guide?
π£ My favourite place to guide would have to be Odzala-Kokoua National Park in Congo-Brazzaville.The heart of the Congo Basin is by far one of my most favourite places in Africa β it's just so wild, so remote, so untouched. There are lots of incredible wildlife sightings and you don't have the crowds, plus the animals you spot there are super rare and elusive creatures.
