Indspire is deeply saddened by the passing of Cree cellist, composer and multidisciplinary artist Cris Derksen. 🕊️
 
Cris was a powerful force in Indigenous music and storytelling, known for blending classical cello with Indigenous traditions in ways that moved audiences across the world. Her artistry, innovation and spirit left a lasting impact on the Indigenous arts community and beyond. 🎻✨
 
We were honoured to have Cris perform at the 2018 Indspire Awards and A Feast in the Forest in 2022, where her extraordinary talent helped celebrate the achievements of Indigenous Peoples across Turtle Island. 🌲
 
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Cris’s family, friends, collaborators and all those whose lives were touched by her music and vision.

We want to wish a warm congratulations to this year’s Inuit Youth Recipient, Simik Komaksiutiksak! ✨

From Kangiqliniq, NU, Simik is an Inuk artist whose work reminds us that movement is medicine. Through dance, storytelling, and mentorship, they are creating spaces where Indigenous youth can express themselves, heal, and be seen.

From performing on national and international stages to collaborating with leading Indigenous artists, Simik continues to push creative boundaries while staying grounded in community. Their journey has taken them from studying dance in Ottawa to performing with artists like Taboo, and appearing in works alongside artists such as Elisapie and Beatrice Deer.

Simik’s work shows us that art can be a pathway to healing, and that every young person deserves a space to move, feel, and belong.
