LAURA STEENBERGE is a performer and composer who works with medieval chant, mythology, poetry, paper and other things. Based in Asheville, she writes songs for solo piano, plays in a contrabass trio, Grotto Lung Three, with Zach Cooper and Landon George, and plays viola da gamba in Maidens of Delos, a duo with hurdy-gurdist KCM Walker.

CLAIRE WHALL is a local singer-songwriter, pulling inspiration from personal darkness and transporting herself and the listener to a place of acceptance and reflection with her haunting folk songs.

ELISA FAIRES has been singing and working with choirs since she was 8 years old, with her studies and practices extending over choral singing, opera, and experimental music. She’s been an educator in voice, piano, composition, and electronic music for over 30 years, leading many choirs & workshops in vocal training, creative music, sound exploration, and even ritualistic ceremonies involving singing, toning, and movement.

She founded the DRONE CHOIR in December, 2024 and debuted it for Drones in the Garden soon after - a deep, healing sound bath of Elisa Faires’ Amaryllis offered to Ramp Studios & the community after Hurricane Helene. It involves sustained sound, movement, animistic practice, & improvisation - drawing from fire, water, air, earth, nature, & a new collaborative piece w/ Sarah Louise, blending cicada sounds voice & instruments. The Drone Choir will be part of her residency at Revolve in October.

It is so nice playing with these guys, there is nothing quite like the combination of instruments that is just basses playing with other basses.

Zach curated this event, and is the resident artist at Lamplight. He is putting on rad shows every Friday this month.

I will also do a solo set, playing Wurlitzer and singing songs, some of which using the words of Spencer Holst and Daniil Kharms, like the Kharms poem “Song” shown here, translation by Matvei Yankelevich

Thursday May 30, 6:15 pm! I’m playing in a new bass trio with Zach Cooper and Landon George. Three contrabasses. It is so fun. This will be our second show and we have some new pieces, including an interpretation of the 11th century chant pictured here. At Bagatelle Books, 428 Haywood Rd, West Asheville.

This Thursday at 6:20 Music for Bookstores presents the finale to our spring series with The Grotto Lung Three! Very excited to host three (3) contrabasses in one (1) bookstore! Not to be missed. Tomorrow, Thursday night! 7pm at the Black Mountain College Museum + Art Center. A trio set of me (viola da gamba), Adam Lion (percussion), and KCM Walker (hurdy gurdy), and a duo: Spiders with Kalashnikovs (Heather Lockie and Clay Chaplin, viola and electronics).

Earlier today Heather showed me some pictures she painted that are connected to the music they will play. Images inspired by Ursula LeGuin’s The Tomb of Atuan. Really beautiful! Come see, she will have copies for you there.
