💭Witnessing the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide awakened Gary Haugen’s redemptive imagination.

Working as a UN investigator, Gary saw firsthand how violence devastates the poor around the world. While Christians were addressing poverty, health, and education, they didn’t have an effective response to stop violence itself. He founded @ijm to strengthen systems on behalf of the most vulnerable.

“I was afraid not so much of the violence or leaving my job, but of being a public failure,” Gary said. “But if I gave in to that fear, the cost was losing what might be the most beautiful and best life I could imagine.” Since its launch in 1997, IJM has protected 10.8 million people from violence.

At Praxis, we partner with leaders who see opportunities for restoration amid brokenness—like Gary taking on risk to protect, rescue, and restore millions.
