Adaptive East Tour
We started our day at Tower Hamlets Town Hall; a former Georgian> Victoria> Arts & Crafts hospital transformed into a dynamic home of local democracy complete with ground floor market. We knew how important this project is but did not anticipate such a brilliant tour. Lead designers Sam Scott and Eleonora Gellenzi from AHMM guided us through the layers of the project and the fundamentals of considered adaptive reuse.
It's been well over a decade since my last visit to Matthew Lloyd’s transformation of St Pauls Church in Bow. The project is still as impressive as ever. A masterclass in spatial gymnastics with an after school study space, counselling rooms, sauna and gymnasium for people with physical disabilities floating above the nave in a tulipwood wrapped sculptural vessel.
A wonderful lunch in the sun at Turner Work’s Hackney Bridge before exploring the former Olympic media park and Wayne McGregor’s Dance studios. I don't think there are many projects in London with a comparable spatial clarity of composition!
And then to V&A East Storehouse- We will never tire of this radical alternative to how we experience culture and create stories about ourselves.
A brilliant day hosted by lovely, proud people in beautifully designed spaces!

A wonderful lunch in the sun at Turner Work’s Hackney Bridge before exploring the former Olympic media park and Wayne McGregor’s Dance studios. I don't think there are many projects in London with a comparable spatial clarity of composition!
And then to V&A East Storehouse- We will never tire of this radical alternative to how we experience culture and create stories about ourselves.

What an inspiring morning exploring some of South London’s freshest, resourceful and innovative reuse projects. We started at Manor Palace, Southwark; a former swimming baths (rave site, temporary gallery, council waste depot) which has been transformed by Sterlet & Jam into a dynamic FREE venue for London’s youth and fearless. A skatepark rises into the air to reveal a football pitch in the former pool. Neighbouring creative studio installations; silver tapering forms reaching up to the existing lanterns, celebrating the distinction between ambient and interior comfort. Greg Cohen from Sterlet, talked us through the ingredients required to connect a housing developer and local authority with unlikely partners Palace and Nike to make this amazing project happen. Truely meaningful!
We then moved on to Damien Hirst, Invader and Obey’s collaboration at the Newport Street Gallery and ended the tour in the cloister at our much-admired Garden Museum. Spring has sprung!!
