😍Time to gush a little! 💺I am on my way to Southampton to chat with the brilliant Mia Delve @southamptoncityartgallery

My film installation—curated and produced by Mia—wouldn’t exist without her practical and emotional support. It’s about bringing people together, celebrating queer bombastic achievements—just as much as it is a hulking, intricate installation built from wood, carpet, fabric and meters ofethernet cables. Mia always believed in the ideas, and held the whole project in her mind, keeping it moving.

Over the years, we worked so hard—securing funding, reshaping and evolving the work. Mia is part of a wider team of creative and technical geniuses who made this possible. I couldn’t have done it without them! @robin_price_ @kaneapplegate @cork_mary @aspacearts @aceagrams @artfund

Join celebrated artist Ian Giles in conversation with ‘a space’ arts’ curator Mia Delve, discussing Ian’s immersive installation, Everyone Together, which is now part of the City’s collection.

The artwork centres around a 4-channel film featuring ‘A Gay Song’, which is heralded as the first LGBTQIA+ protest song recorded onto vinyl in 1972. In 2024, Giles reformed the original band to re-record the song 52 years after its inception. The resulting film is shown alongside monumental textile hangings and a communal space designed for gathering, relaxing and connecting.

This event will take place in the Art Gallery’s Lecture Theatre and begins at 2.30pm, lasting approximately 1 hour. You are welcome to visit the Gallery to experience the installation before or after the event, admission to the Art Gallery is free.

A few glimpses inside Everyone Involved at Southampton City Art Gallery ✨

At the heart of the work is a 4-channel film centred on “A Gay Song” (1972) — the first LGBTQIA+ protest song recorded on vinyl. 52 years later, I re-recorded it with the original band. Legends!

Alongside the film: textile works and a communal space designed for gathering, resting and connecting.

Come spend some time with it 💫
.

Michael Klein (Vocals & Guitar), Gillian Bartlam (Vocals), Nigel Stewart (Piano), Richard Lanchester (Percussion), James Asher (Drums) with Nick Appleton (Bass) and Sophie Wright-Palmer, Josi Clay, Susan Beattie and PK Taylor (Choir). Recorded and Mixed by Isabel Gracefield at RAK Studios in June 2024. Studio Assistant: Tommy Bosustow.

Crew credits:

Ian Giles (Director & Editor), Sophie Crawford (Musical Director), Oscar Oldershaw (Director of Photography), Jackie Teboul (2nd Camera), Joana Magalhães (1st AC), Arie Priede (2nd AC), Edward Heredia (Gaffer), Stephen Crabb (Spark), Sid Jones (Key Grip), Joseph Campbell (Sound Recordist), Bertie Taylor-Smith (Stylist), Ian Giles (Production Designer), Becky Warnock (Talent Support), Alex Bijan Zandi (Colourist) and Mia Delve (Producer). In Memory of Alan Wakeman

With thanks to:

Mary Cork, Tegan Nicholls, Emma Townsend, Sam Lee, Jeremy Atherton Lin, Emmyland, Green Kit and Halo.

Funded by:

Arts Council England, Art Fund, National Lottery Heritage Fund and Friends of Southampton’s Museums and Art Galleries (FoSMAG) for the Southampton City Art Gallery Collection.

Des Lynam, eat your heart out — punditry from me on the BBC News website today.

I had a chat with Nick about Keith Haring while en route to King’s Lynn— in excellent company alongside Dr Fiona Anderson and Dan Glass 🏳️‍🌈

Now, back to the studio Moira 📺

V honoured to be included in this new gay book - thanks to @adam.zmith & @tashwalker85 for mentioning On Railton Road (a play by @mercibeauclouand me) And quoting the iconic musings of Atom 😵‍💫🌱🤩🌱 played by @tranne_boleyn & @celynofgwent.
❤️It’s always a boost to see stuff I’ve made being included in books— feels like some of it matters and sticks.

📚Image 5: Shout out to my local bookshop for stocking this book and being a haven this morning 👶🏻#shoplocal @ink84books

About the book: Dozens of volunteer log books from Switchboard, a queer helpline founded in 1974, document intimate calls revealing the struggles, fears, and hopes of queer people whose lives were often hidden or criminalized. Rediscovered by Tash Walker and Adam Zmith, these stories—collected in The Log Books—connect past and present queer experiences, reclaiming them as a vital part of national history.
