ARCHIVES
Huge thank you to @bishopsgateinstitute and @Stefan.dickers for giving an incredible behind-the-scenes LGBTQ+ archives tour to our team 🌈

We saw everything from Queer Britain badges and the newly restored first Switchboard log book, to a Rebel Dykes bedframe, a rainbow “pulling jumper”, and a 1941 diary from a gay man in Brixton.

It was such a great reminder that queer history isn’t only made by figures like Oscar Wilde and Radclyffe Hall it’s also made by everyday queer lives.

IDAHOBIT

IDAHOBIT is a global moment of solidarity for LGBTQIA+ communities, raising awareness of the discrimination queer people continue to face.

This year feels especially important amid the continued rise in homophobic and transphobic rhetoric. Justin Fashanu’s story reminds us of the devastating impact homophobia can have.

The Chris Holland print draws on protest graphics from LGBTQ+ rights movements fighting back against homophobia - a reminder how queer rights had to be fought for.

TRANS+ HISTORY WEEK

Trans, intersex and gender-diverse people have always been part of British history.

🎨 Gluck rejected gendered titles entirely, insisting on “no prefix, suffix, or quotes.”

✨ In 1870, Fanny and Stella were arrested in London while wearing women’s clothing. Their 1871 trial became one of Victorian Britain’s most famous queer scandals.

🖌️ Carrington challenged gender norms through masculine style and rejection of conventional femininity in early 20th century Britain.

⚽️ Mark Weston, an intersex athlete, changed his name to Mark and lived as a man in 1936.

🩺 Michael Dillon, a British physician and trans man, is widely recognised as the first known trans man to undergo phalloplasty.

🏎️ Roberta Cowell, a racing driver and former WWII pilot, became one of Britain’s earliest publicly known trans women, with her birth certificate changed in 1951.

This Trans+ History Week, we remember: we have always been here 🏳️‍⚧️

REPAIR SHOP
It was wonderful to see our trustee @thatlisapower on last night's episode of The Repair Shop. Lisa took the very first logbook from Switchboard which was reduced to a loose collection of delicate pages, with its spine missing and margins crumbling, the logbook is at risk of being lost forever.

Bookbinder Chris Shaw rebound the pages without trimming a single word. Thank you The Repair Shop and Chris, for giving us back a piece of history. You can watch the episode now on BBC IPlayer.

ADMIRAL DUNCAN
Today, 30 April, marks the anniversary of the 1999 bombing of the Admiral Duncan - a devastating act of homophobic violence. Three lives were lost and over 70 people were injured.

We remember Andrea Dykes, Nik Moore and John Light, and stand with all those affected that day. We honour the strength of LGBTQ+ communities and the ongoing fight for for LGBTQ+ rights.

LESBIAN VISIBILITY DAY ☀️
You’ve probably heard this quote before - but do you know where it came from?

It’s traced back to the 1979 San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade, the slogan was used as a rebuke to anti-gay campaigner Anita Bryant, parodying a famous orange juice advert she appeared in.

This Lesbian Visibility Day, we honour all the lesbians who have fought, and continue to fight, for the entire LGBTQ+ community.

LESBIAN VISIBILITY WEEK 🧡🩷💛

Happy Lesbian Visibility Week! Our Assistant Curator Beau (they/them) told us: “Lesbian Day of Visibility to me means being known as not just a lesbian, but a proud nonbinary dyke!”

One of Beau’s favourite objects in the museum is the Lesbian Fighting Song by Ova, a feminist band. Their shop picks are the Dyke brooch by @leftbians and Thank You for Calling the Lesbian Line by Elizabeth Lovatt.
