THE WAY WE WERE by Devin McKay

Here is my film that premiered at the Atlanta Film Festival! This entire experience has been nothing short of extraordinary. I'm super grateful to have shown my work alongside 10 other incredible filmmakers.

Fun Fact: My team filmed this THE NIGHT BEFORE the deadline. Started at 9pm. Finished shooting by 12:30am. Edited until 4:30am. Turned in by 10:25am.

You can't make that turnaround with everyone. Luckily, I had great people who I could trust.

Thank you @hettywho @spencerwastaken @averytalksaboutstuff and @nsalas810 for bringing my crazy little dream to life.

And thank you @kick.the.ladder for always giving me the space to experiment.

For last week's @kick.the.ladder challenge, I adapted a scene from the fantasy novel "Nettle and Bone" by @redwombatstudio.

The image of this scene stuck with me after reading the novel last year. Such a good analogy for so many things in life that keep us captive, and yet are hard to let go of.

The rules were: #ktl33j - Exactly 3 words and must include at least 1 inanimate object as a main character.

It was a fun challenge to work the existing scene from the book into a new form that fit the rule of the filmmaking game.

Made in about three hours and edited the next morning.

Another hard year in the books. I broke my wrist (dancing), sprained my ankle (dancing), lost two people I cared about deeply, made a lot of videos and took a lot of photos. And I started writing songs again. I don't like to think I need pain to create, but sometimes it does seem to work like a trigger of creativity. And no, I will NEVER stop dancing.

Speaking of which, this little music video was one of my favorite things I made last year. It was for @kick.the.ladder and it was so fun to work with a dancer (@alexandrapetkus )and come up with the movements (I planned the camera movements and where she would be in space, and she came up with the actual dance movements). This is one of my favorite songs - Surprise Yourself by @jackgarratt

I can only hope that in 2026, we can all surprise ourselves.

I found myself writing this poem today in my Artist Way morning pages and I thought it paired well with a sunrise photo I took last year in Tybee. Consider it a birthday self-portrait. Thanks for all the good wishes. I’m glad I’m here 💛

*******

I came into this world
without a struggle, you told me.
It was easy. I’ve made up
for it since then, twisting and
turning, desperate
to find my way out alive.
It was Easter morning,
the dogwoods were blooming.
They put bunny ears on me
and sent me home. You took
me to the doctor because I rarely cried. I’ve made up for it since then,
overwhelmed with emotions
that often feel like
afflictions. You wrote in your
journal “Rebecca is like the sun,
but Hetty is like the moon,” quiet,
reflective. I’ve made up for it since
then. Loud, cackling, boisterous, often
told to be quiet. I wonder what
you would text me today,
your perpetual problem child,
full of laughter and riddles,
staring at the sun,
as she spins around it one more time.

I made a 5-minute film for an Esperanto film festival and if you give it a “like” on YouTube, I could win some cash! The film with the most likes there on Nov 19th will win $200.
Link in bio. Don't forget to turn on English closed captions :)

One of my favorite albums to listen to in the fall is @heathmcneaseofficial “Hocus Pocus: Sad Songs Inspired By The Film” - so I made a fun little music video to go along with one of the songs titled: “Your Parents Are At a Party, And They’re Not Coming To Save You” 😅

Thanks to my friends for being weird and letting me film them at a super lit halloween party :)

Enjoy!

Ps
Thanks to @professional_beanz for those artsy shots of Batman

I used to carry her around on my hip. I call her "O.G. Hannah" Because she was the first Hannah in my life. 💛
