Big news 💥we won first prize in the competition to design the new research archive „Tor zur Literatur“ in Marbach as part of the @dla_marbach. Big thanks to our great competition team, Greta Mauz and Günes Yazar, with landscape design by mahl gebhard konzepte, @transsolar_klimaengineering @schlaichbergermannpartner

F\F "Tell us a about your project “The Solid State of Matter”, also known as the Frozen Tent."
Gustav Düsing "It was originally created for the 2017 first and only Antarctic Biennale to which I was invited, and is a pretty radical investigation into the limits of shelter.
The tent is the original typology of Antartica – the first man-made structure out there was a tent. We can learn a lot from it as humans I think – how we deal with footprint, for example.
The tent I created for this occasion consists of a fabric structure that becomes rigid and structural only when sprayed with water and frozen by the environment."
F\F "You recently reconstructed the frozen tent in Berlin-Westend, close to your home. How does the ‘comfort’ of that structure change when it is placed in a domestic urban square versus the Antarctic wilderness?"
Gustav Düsing "Absolutely. It changed a lot. In Antarctica it was an experiment, an idea, a narrative.
Here, it was a community project. The tent was put up, and soon people started taking over the space – it became a public space: It became dirty, kids were even smoking weed inside. I was fascinated about how it was immediately accepted – a very satisfying moment for me as an architect."

To step into the world of @gustavdusing is to enter a space where architecture behaves more like music than masonry.
Whether he is freezing fabric into a structural “tent” or designing award-winning university hubs, Gustav’s work is a study in “productive friction” — the delicate point where radical transparency meets the human need for shelter.
In the interview on our website, we peel back the layers of a practice defined by more than just steel and glass. We discuss his “fresh air fetishism”, his skepticism of AI-driven perfection, and his unique philosophy of “The Wedding DJ” — the idea that great architecture must make everyone dance, from the academic theorist to the casual passerby. Competition, Haus der Musik Braunschweig, 2nd Prize,
The project involves the adaptive reuse of a former department store, transforming it into a music school that incorporates a large concert hall. The existing building was carefully assessed with the objective of preserving as much of the original structural fabric as possible.
The proposed reconfiguration maintains the original circulation cores while introducing a new central atrium. This atrium functions as a form of public, non-commercial interior space, conceived as a climatized extension of public space.

On 22/01 @gustavdusing (Berlin, DE) gave a lecture as part of our ongoing series on „StadtBauKunst“. Together with @torzofrancesca he reflected on his work regarding the theme of „Architects as Artists“.
Thank you for being our guest, Gustav!

We are looking forward to the third evening of our series „StadtBauKunst“ on Jan 22nd, 6:30 pm, Kunsthaus Hamburg, Klosterwall 15.
The evening is entitled „Architects as Artists“
and we look forward to presentations by:
Francesca Torzo | Genua
Gustav Düsing | Berlin
Inspired by Fritz Schumacher’s own work as an artist, architect and urban planner this year’s series examines the multiple relations between art, architecture and the city. Four complementary doubles explore the theme from diverse perspectives.

We made a frozen tent for our Berlin neighborhood.
Originally developed for the 2017 Antarctic Biennale curated by @nadim.samman the tent explores extrem weather conditions as a resource for architectural space.
At this year’s ICONIC AWARDS ceremony, we spoke with Gustav Düsing, winner of the Debut Work of the Year award for the student residence at TU Braunschweig, which he designed together with Max Hacke.
He told us what makes the building particularly special to him, why collaborative work plays a central role in his creative process and how he defines this partnership-based approach.
