Why do I draw?
I’ve asked myself this question for many years. And for many years, the questions have evolved from ‘how do I draw?’ ‘what do I draw?’ and now, more and more, ‘why?’. The meaning of these questions evolve as well. Over time, over practice, and over epiphanies, and epitomes, the question always comes back to the core. The purpose of drawing. Why? What for? Many answers revolve around what ‘not’ to draw. Or what not to draw ‘for’. For knowledge? Skill? Self worth? Social acceptance? Inclusion? Respect? Money? All of these things, as important as they may seem to focus on, are only the resulting factors of the equation. And often out of my control. For me, the reason why I draw lies in a place of love. I often say this, that I draw because I love to. What do I love about it? Many things. But mainly, three things. Simple, Honest, and Direct. It’s not the things that I draw, but how I draw them. Whatever I draw, it shows me more. Shows who I am. How I think. What I prioritize. And what I believe to be important. If you align with my drawing, we’re on a similar frequency. If not, we’re just not tuned in to each others’ frequencies. There are technical channels and intellectual ones. Often they can both broadcast, but also often, only one lands. Maybe this is too long of a post to be putting here, but I’m feeling reflective today. Maybe because I’m getting ready to talk about this stuff on Wednesday. If you’re around NYC this week, I’ve been invited to speak about my drawing practice by @transcenderart hosted by @equitygallery - Wednesday starting at 7pm. Sharp!

We did it! You all helped me bring some attention to this drawing I created, and now it’s going to be part of an exhibition next Wednesday - Thursday. May 13-15.
At 1 Times Square!! I will be there to celebrate the opening on Wednesday at 3:00pm. And if you happen to be in that area on those days, please take a picture and tag me! It’s going to be epic, seeing this drawing done on paper being displayed on a giant (12 story high?) digital display!! Honored and excited to be included. Amongst mostly digital artworks being exhibited, I have a hand drawn, pencil drawing on paper! That’s pretty cool.
