Yesterday, members of Govan Brown Building Group were honoured to stand alongside @ywcahamilton and community leaders and celebrate the start of a partnership that will ultimately deliver more than a building. With construction now underway on the new Oakwood Place, a transitional housing development supporting women and children and providing them with peripheral services, the project is both an investment in its future residents and Hamilton itself. Designed by @wwparchitects to achieve Passive House Certification, the mass timber project is a step towards both a more equitable today and a more sustainable tomorrow.

Safety is Built Together

The way we show up for one another, day in and day out, defines the workplace we create. That collective responsibility feels especially present today, as we come together to recognize the National Day of Mourning and honour those impacted by job-related incidents. This year’s theme, “Ensuring Workers Survive and Thrive,” calls on us to go beyond a renewed commitment to creating safe jobsites. It asks us to utilize a 360° approach and build systems of support rooted in care that are embedded on site and beyond.

Circularity isn’t a philosophy - it’s a set of practical choices that show up long before a work boot hits a site and long after occupancy. Susan Tienhaara, GB’s QA/QC Manager, lent her perspective to a dynamic discussion on how we as a collective in the AEC industry can realize projects that don’t just meet today’s standards but contribute to something smarter and more enduring - a legacy. One where durability, adaptability, and thoughtful choices reduce waste, extend a space’s life, and prove that sustainability works best when it’s built in. When @gwlra set out to reach new heights with its lobby revitalization at their 33 Yonge Street property in Toronto’s Financial District, Govan Brown Building Group rose to the occasion and helped to level up the idea of what a town square could look like. A true gathering place for tenants to connect and collaborate, the atrium-style lobby reflects a workspace built for vertical growth. We were proud to work alongside @dialogdesign and @gensler_design to deliver a space that went beyond renovation and be a true elevation.

There are leaders who step into an organization and quickly make a mark. They bring a new perspective to what’s possible and have the resolve to put their plan into action. That’s how Jeff Leech has approached his time at Govan Brown.

With more than two decades of experience delivering complex commercial and institutional projects, Jeff brings a steady and measured approach to leadership. He has a way of seeing the bigger picture while staying grounded in what it takes to get there, creating alignment across teams and building confidence in the path ahead. In a short time, that perspective has had a meaningful impact across our Southwestern Ontario team and in the way we’ve supported our clients.

We’re pleased, then, to share that Jeff has been promoted to Director of Operations, SW Ontario. As the region continues to evolve, Jeff will play a key role in guiding the office through its next phase. His focus will be on ensuring our team is positioned to support this growth in a meaningful way, so we can continue to contribute to the communities we’re a part of and play a role in what Southwestern Ontario is becoming.

Some people are part of the fabric of an organization. They represent something greater than themselves - they model the values, commitment, and integrity that define a company’s culture.

Tom Mason joined Govan Brown in 2010, and his journey is one that is marked by perseverance, dedication, humility, and an unwavering eagerness to grow and learn. His impact is not only seen in the projects he’s delivered - and that list is long - but also in the careers he’s helped shape, the clients he’s championed, and the partnerships he’s built.

Tom’s early days at GB were spent as a member of the project management team which sparked a passion for numbers, leading to a transition into Estimating. His leadership and ability to make an impact led to a role as Account Executive, where he cultivated partnerships both nationally and globally. This experience positioned him to lead GB’s expansion into Southwestern Ontario, serving as Director of Operations for our Kitchener office. From workplace transformations for leaders in the technology space to serving as account lead for our global Eataly program, which began with a project in Toronto and has grown to multiple locations across the world, Tom’s ability to take an idea and thoughtfully build it into something far greater is a defining strength.

In that spirit, Tom now embarks on his next chapter at GB, leading our Vancouver office as Director of Operations. We’re proud to see Tom bring his leadership to Vancouver as he works alongside the team to guide the next phase of growth in the region.

The Heated Rivalry Continues

This past February, GB took on @teknion in our seventh annual hockey showdown. And this year, we took it outside, Winter Classic-style.

Whistle to whistle, the puck moved end-to-end, top-shelf snipes were fired, and both teams lit the lamp (one more than the other… we won’t say who though). In swapping partnership for sportsmanship, we left it all on the rink, both effort and chirps, ending with a round of cheers that carried on well past the final buzzer.
