During “The Great Cicada Emergence” of 2024, I spent the summer in the greater Chicago area collecting 100,000 Cicada shells with friends. Using nothing but the cicada’s natural latching mechanism to adhere them to the canvas, I’ve begun turning them into a series of paintings.
Cicadas live on strict time cycles. There is a population that comes out every 13 years and one that comes out every 17 years. The summer of 2024 was the first time in 221 years that these cycles overlapped, leading to a true spectacle of nature.
Illinois was swarmed with cicadas, with over 1 trillion coming out of the ground and each leaving behind an exoskeleton as they matured. Some called it the “cicadapocalypse,“ but I saw it as the perfect opportunity to gather some friends and go collect 100,000 carefully preserved cicada shells.
The trees of suburban Chicago created the material used in this painting. Every cicada spent either 13 or 17 years under a tree, siphoning nutrients from its roots in order to grow the very exoskeleton that has been placed on the canvas.
Due to factors such as soil fertility and sunlight, each tree raises slightly different cicadas. These slight color and size variations played a role in the composition of the piece. The trained eye can pick up exactly where each group of cicadas (all coming from the same tree) starts and ends.
I view these trees as collaborators on this work, and in order to properly credit them for their contribution, the lid of each tub we collected was marked with the exact location of the trees that created the cicadas inside. We used that data to construct a map showing the specific trees that helped me create “Populace”. The images on my website show the cicada painting with an overlay revealing the distinct cicada populations that contributed to the final work.

Poncho is alive! He’s loves to have the barn doors opens to let in a fresh breeze… morning sunshine is also nice…

Poncho arrived to the charming town of Castell this week, wearing the iconic native grass Little Bluestem.
Opening tomorrow for the Enduring Forces show by @lacunacenter . On view in Castell till June, when Poncho will be eaten by local cows.
Every blade was hand-harvested. Wasn’t easy to find out here, given that livestock love to eat it. Will share more about Poncho in another post.
Thanks so much to La Cuna and the good people of Castell for having me out for such a magical week!
