"the creative consultant and their artwork, the creative consultant with their artwork, the creative consultant and their record," seen by the brilliant @joyssekpon on a sunny afternoon at @sawahouse_ . (may 16, 2026)
a lovely DM on march 2024 became an ideation session, a cozy lunch, a new beginning, and finally, an album titled "CHELBÈ".
following cozy chats about shared artistic desires, delicious food, and an impromptu street-style interview, @louphelps invited me to partake in the weaving of the cover of his latest sonic offering "CHELBÈ" as a creative consultant.
joining @nicoshootspeople and @alvaillancourt , through whose eyes the project’s visuals were seen, I embarked on a visual research adventure for which my primary sources were my momzi’s accounts of "chelbèrtitude," and the numerous familial albums I am now the custodian of.
textures, colors, gazes, outfits - these are some of the core elements I focused on in order to ensure "CHELBÈ" would be visually translated en bonne et due forme. we ended up using the texture of a scanned archive of my maternal grandmother to create the frame of the portrait featured on the cover. I believe the remainder of a state stamp on a younger archive of her was also used as a reference point to create the stamp featured on CHELBÈ’s cover.
[…]
fast-forward to approximately a year later, on a cold Wednesday evening, I was able to hold the physical iteration of my first endeavor as a creative consultant as Lou gave me a copy of CHELBÈ’s vinyl record. what a delight!
[…]
this weekend, I (finally) took archives of what was an eye-opening new beginning, an offered permission to name a form of artistry I wasn’t even aware I was doing (nor that I could do for someone other than me).
thank you for seeing in me something I had yet to envision + for encouraging and enabling me to experience this Lou!

this coming Sunday, May 17th, the first edition of @kaz_theman and I’s sonic salon will unfold at @cantinova.cafe from 4:00PM to 7:00PM. this free gathering is an occasion to listen to vinyl records on a delightful soundsystem in the comfort of a cozy café, together.
ahead of this new beginning, I thought I’d share excerpts of the *three books I’ll be bringing for on-site consultation as well as scans of records that have been making my heart sing recently. (special mention for the Eric Virgal’s record I found during an afternoon of vinyl store hopping in Toronto, last Friday, after running into the kind @bisharo.farah and @yemi.sees de mon coeur, on my way to eat a delightful meal with mon amour @iyeketi - what a wholesome afternoon this was!)
if your heart desires and your capacity allows, please bring your favorite record and your delightful self to an evening of music (re)discoveries and tender exchanges that promises to be lovely.
à bientôt ? (!)
P.S. even if you do not have vinyl records, you are more than welcome to join us!
*
the three books that will be available for on-site consultation are: "ART SELVES : Album Covers by Artists," by DB Burkeman ( @rizzolibooks ), "FUNK & SOUL COVERS," by Joaquim Paulo, ed. Julius Wiedermann ( @taschen ), and "FREEDOM RHYTHM & SOUND - REVOLUTIONARY JAZZ COVER ART - CHAPTER TWO: JOURNEYS TO ENLIGHTENMENT," compiled by Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker ( @souljazzrecords ).

Spring is here and so are new beginnings! next Sunday, May 17, from 4:00PM to 7:00PM, Kaz and I excitedly invite you to join us at @cantinova.cafe for the first iteration of our sonic salon - an offering that arose from our love for music and desire to weave opportunities for people to bask into the delight of listening to musical coups de coeur on a good soundsystem.
yearning to mirror Ayisyen living rooms where music often plays as the mundane and the exceptional unfold, the sonic salon is a free gathering in which ancestors in training (you!) are invited to bring a vinyl record of their choice to play.
the goal? discovering new music and/or being reacquainted to forgotten sonic offerings, gems.
as places are limited, please make sure to RSVP via the link in my bio if you would like to join us.
à bientôt ? (!)

B1. from Chicago to Dennery / JUKE VS DENNERY SEGMENT
a fresh retwist gracieuseté de la momzette, the NIGGARIFIC shirt is on, left ear practice, and riding the rhythm - from DJ Slugo's "Where The Rats" to G6 Productions' "2 Stroke Riddim".
last week, @babymmune / @realnigga.93 shared an excerpt of his latest sonic offering titled "FOOTWORK VS LEGWORK" - a 32:18 minutes sonic voyage highlighting the fact that "ALL BLACK SOUND IS CONNECTED BY A RHYTHM".
the audiovisual excerpt he shared reminded me of @lafhomme 's sonic research / weaving, and mirrored ongoing sonic explorations of mine in which I search for and play with sonic iterations of (Black) fugitivity / marronage.
[…]
G6 Productions, one of the most prolific producers of the Dennery segment genre - also referred to as its pioneer by his uncle and musical collaborator Denzel Hutchinson - unfortunately became an ancestor three years ago, succumbing to gunshot wounds. he was 25 years old.
[…]
during his set at @nowadaysnyc for @dwellerforever 's 2026 NONSTOP edition, DJ Slugo reminded the dancers of the importance to support and celebrate fellow artists, peers, pioneers, while they’re alive.

a Sony camcorder and a cellphone, an (almost done) bed-studio, a sunny afternoon, testing USB cables, glitches, (finally) basking in the tender weather of Spring, preparing for @sonoluxmtl / @subterramtl 's sonic offering tomorrow (wink wink), neighbours strolling outside wondering where the music is coming from, a desire to test out sonic transits I imagined upon listening to now-acquired records, and did I say glitches?
these were the ingredients for a 2:38:11 jam session that unfolded this Wednesday under the delightful sun and soft breeze of Spring. my intention with this weekly practice + ideation session was to practice my left hand, tap into word play as I weave transitions, and simply listen to records I hadn’t gotten the chance to listen to fully and/or in a long time.
here are excerpts of this lovely afternoon, live from a place that now mirrors my desires more accurately than it ever has.

a Sony camcorder and a cellphone, an (almost done) bed-studio, a sunny afternoon, testing USB cables, glitches, (finally) basking in the tender weather of Spring, preparing for @sonoluxmtl / @subterramtl 's sonic offering tomorrow (wink wink), neighbours strolling outside wondering where the music is coming from, a desire to test out sonic transits I imagined upon listening to now-acquired records, and did I say glitches?
these were the ingredients for a 2:38:11 jam session that unfolded this Wednesday under the delightful sun and soft breeze of Spring. my intention with this weekly practice + ideation session was to practice my left hand, tap into word play as I weave transitions, and simply listen to records I hadn’t gotten the chance to listen to fully and/or in a long time.
here are excerpts of this lovely afternoon, live from a place that now mirrors my desires more accurately than it ever has.
bonne écoute!

"l’artiste et son oeuvre, l’artiste chez son oeuvre, les amours et leur oeuvre," seen by the lovely @shelseaaf on a gray morning at @bbbastik & @rami_coles ‘ tender abode. (april 7, 2025)
in february 2024, my dear friend Domo ( @puredomo ) invited me to join a group of brilliant African and Afrodescendant artists for a tender exhibition titled "soulful embrace: an ode to love". although I had anterior visual explorations ready to go, I yearned to create something new - something that translated my love for the villages whose grace, kindness, and love fuel me. this desire combined with a need to prove to myself that scarcity is not (necessarily) the arch nemesis of creativity led to the creation of a 74 x 39 inches acrylic painting titled "gloria-sherryl (G L O W Z I) françois - autoportrait 001" (2024).
in a matter of 3 days, I used (and finished) most of the acrylic paint that had been collecting dust in my bedstudio. the canvas I had used as a backdrop for many audiovisual offerings finally served its (intended) purpose. the exhibition unfolded beautifully and marked the beginning of friendships I have yet to find the words to describe ( cc: @semto.o ) - what a delightful adventure this was!
[…]
fast-forward to a couple of days later, mes amours Anick and Rami had me over, and as we were laughing and chatting over a cheese platter, they asked me if anyone had inquired about buying my latest autoportrait. I hadn’t even thought about selling my painting then, and it was only a question of organizing a U-Haul trip prior to it arriving / settling in its new home.
[…]
last week, I (finally) took archives of my latest painting in its tender abode, with its dear caretakers, on a gray day filled with laughter. this autoportrait is composed of a few of the many mirrors of my desires - the lovely Helma, Yemisi, Aminata, Lou, and Iris.

@glowziesque presents
manman’m renmen sa anpil : Nemours Jean-Baptiste & Webert Sicot, les papas du konpa
this Friday, @glowziesque will go live for the first time with a series titled “manman’m renmen sa anpil” (my mother loves this dearly), weehou!
propelled by a yearning for communal gatherings, and curated through a Ayisyen mother's / dancer's delightful sonic palette, this series aims to gather people around sounds, literature and exchanges rooted in musical explorations and curiosity.
for this new beginning, sonic offerings by the two artists credited for the creation of Ayiti’s renowned sonic realm, konpa - Nemours Jean-Baptiste and Webert Sicot - will be put in a tender hour long waltz, choreographed by yours truly. following this sonic waltz, a short introduction to the aforementioned artists, their desires, as well as the times that shaped their artistic explorations and lives will be shared.
the first iteration of manman’m renmen sa anpil will end with an invitation to exchange about the showcased music, and to consult additional vinyl records that shaped the emergence of konpa throughout 1950-1960 Ayiti as well as books related to the country's eclectic culture.
this event is free, and masks will be offered and required.
please make sure to RSVP via the link in bio if you would like to join me for this new beginning.
à bientôt ? (!)
