To the Composers’ Hall composers travel from all over the world. Some explore the outer reaches of instrumental music; others the winding, suggestive force of electronics. In between lies an ocean of diverse expressions and reflections of contemporary music, given space to emerge and grow in the beautiful harbor of Visby.
The Austrian composer and sound artist Ursula Winterauer, who captured the spring in Visby, is one of those remarkable artists who brings together the extremes encompassed by our residency. Under her alias GISCHT, a body of work has evolved over decades in which the materiality and spatial qualities of sound give rise to a music that roars, pulses, presses forward, and at the same time shimmers in delicate overtones, brushing the listener with poetic gentleness.
Much of her career has unfolded in the borderlands between doom, experimental sound art, techno, and the inviting plurality of expressions found in the art gallery. Here in Visby, we have had the privilege of hosting her at a moment when a shift has begun to take shape, an reorientation in her compositional approach. Acoustic instruments are becoming increasingly involved, and with them, notation has started to enter the works. Not in a traditional sense, but rather through instructions and indications, no less precise for that. It is a development, or perhaps an expansion of her exploration, that feels entirely organic. Ursula’s music has long been as much about creating conditions for art as about producing it herself. That it is now also being passed on to musicians, thereby opening up an additional layer of dialogue, feels like a natural progression.
Ursula’s residency has been made possible through our residency collaboration with the Swedish Arts Grants Committee.

The 14th edition of the 🟡 @patchlabfestival concluded with experimental performances at @cricoteka that explored the theme of so-called wasted data - unnecessary, useless data, including that which is left behind after death.
In 🟡'Hallucinations', Ursula Winterauer @gischt____ and Claudia Larcher @claudia_larcher took as their starting point the phenomenon of artificial intelligence hallucinations, when algorithms, beyond control, misinterpret data or generate fiction. In their project, relics of analog media were brought to life as audio-visual archives and overwritten by AI, gaining an entirely new context.
⮕The project was presented under the patronage of the @afkwaw

Tender Matter and Ventil Records Present: Ursula Winterauer - »When Dust Settles« LIVE with ensemble
»When dust settles« explores the sounds of a city in transformation and turns them into an acoustic reflection. At the heart of the piece are the everyday noises of construction and redevelopment, often perceived as disruptive or even unbearable. They not only stand for change and transformation, but also symbolize the speed and impermanence of contemporary life.
In the sound piece these urban sounds, arising from the process of city restructuring, are treated as an archive of collective memory, reinterpreted through careful arrangement and attentive listening. Field recordings of old, still-standing buildings, new machines, and the voices of those involved in the transformation merge within the composition. The juxtaposition of old and new— stones, earth, structures, voices, and sounds—creates an acoustic collision of different temporalities. Demolition and reconstruction together tell a story of transition.
Ursula Winterauer’s piece »When Dust Settles« will have its Vienna premiere at The Gate, a Frequency, an evening of new audio works presented by Tender Matter and Ventil Records.

The Gate, A Frequency
Tender Matter and Ventil Records Present an Evening of New Audio Works
Anniversary Compositions for Acoustic and Electronic Ensemble
@ventilrecords @tendermatter
The Vienna based music labels and event promoters Tender Matter and Ventil Records joined forces for a collaborative event to mark their respective fifth and tenth anniversaries.
The program will feature two premieres of new works by Tony Wagner and aloisius, specifically commissioned for this occasion, and one Viennese premiere of a work by Ursula Winterauer aka Gischt.
The program explores the fluid boundary between composed music and sound performance. The pieces navigate a terrain of ambient textures, deep drones, and the complex forms of contemporary classical music. The architecture and acoustics of AIL are central for the performances created for The Gate.
Set during a time of seasonal transition, the evening frames shared listening as a collective experience. It examines how sound can reshape the perception of a space and strengthen communal bonds.
This event celebrates the collaboration of two forces in Vienna’s music scene: Tender Matter, turning five, and Ventil Records, marking a full decade. Both labels have consistently provided a platform for innovative local and international artists in the field of experimental music.
