That order begins at the source. The candles and smoke he paints are nothing more than fragmentary subjects gathered, at random, from Pinterest, the photograph-based social curation platform. The grammar of a web environment, in which an algorithm pushes an endless stream of visual data to be consumed sans focused attention, aligns with Kwon's intent: to sever the conventional metaphors that cling to such objects and to strip away the photograph's original context. Base materialismโin the words of Batailleโcandles and smoke are thereby released from their familiar associations, the light of the spiritual or the residue of what has burned, and brought down into the narrow physical environment Kwon can handle with his own hands. Meok and paper, in the same movement, long treated as bearers of spiritual significance in East Asian painting, are reduced to purely material units whose function is to mimic the pixel structure of a digital image.

Defragmentation presents new paintings by Kwon Sejin in which candle flames and smoke, drawn from photographs collected at random on Pinterest, are translated square by square onto standardized sheets of paper in meok (Indian ink). The premise is straightforward and the constraints are severe. A subject that resists being held in place, burning, dispersing, vanishing, is fed into a system of rules that fixes the size of the paper, the size of the grid within it, and the order in which the parts are made. Defragmentation presents new paintings by Kwon Sejin in which candle flames and smoke, drawn from photographs collected at random on Pinterest, are translated square by square onto standardized sheets of paper in meok (Indian ink). The premise is straightforward and the constraints are severe. A subject that resists being held in place, burning, dispersing, vanishing, is fed into a system of rules that fixes the size of the paper, the size of the grid within it, and the order in which the parts are made.
