그가 그리는 촛불과 연기는 사진 파일 기반의 소셜 큐레이션 서비스인 핀터레스트(Pinterest)에서 무작위적으로 수집된 파편적 대상에 불과하다. 알고리즘에 의해 무한히 투사되는 시각 데이터를 무심하게 소비하는 웹 환경의 문법은 사물이 지닌 관습적인 메타포를 차단하고 사진 고유의 맥락을 소거하려는 작가의 의도와 공명한다. 바타유의 ‘저급 유물론’ 관점을 빌릴 때, 촛불과 연기는 영성의 빛이나 타버린 잔해라는 보편적 함의를 탈피해, 흥미롭게도 작가가 신체적으로 제어 가능한(handling) 협소한 물리적 환경으로 편입된다. 이 과정에서 정신성의 표상이었던 먹과 종이는 디지털 이미지의 픽셀 구조를 모사하기 위한 순수한 물질적 재료, 즉 저급한 시각 데이터의 구성 요소로 전락한다.

That order begins at the source. The candles and smoke he paints are nothing more than fragmentary subjects gathered, at random, from Pinterest, the photograph-based social curation platform. The grammar of a web environment, in which an algorithm pushes an endless stream of visual data to be consumed sans focused attention, aligns with Kwon's intent: to sever the conventional metaphors that cling to such objects and to strip away the photograph's original context. Base materialism—in the words of Bataille—candles and smoke are thereby released from their familiar associations, the light of the spiritual or the residue of what has burned, and brought down into the narrow physical environment Kwon can handle with his own hands. Meok and paper, in the same movement, long treated as bearers of spiritual significance in East Asian painting, are reduced to purely material units whose function is to mimic the pixel structure of a digital image.

권세진의 회화는 대상을 마주하는 신체적, 환경적 조건과 그로부터 파생된 엄격한 규칙이 동반되며 발동하는 이미지의 역학을 탐구한다. 《조각 모음: Defragmentation》은 휘발하는 촛불과 연기의 형상을 규격화된 종이와 전통 재료인 먹의 물질적 조합으로 매개한다. 이는 단일하게 포획되지 않고 사라지는 비물질적 대상의 특성을 화폭의 크기를 제한하고 재료의 성질을 거스르며 고안한 정교한 규칙에 대입하는 실험이다. 이러한 시도는 조르주 바타유의 ‘비정형(L’informe)’ 논의를 경유하여, 사물의 상징을 와해하고 그 기저의 작동적 힘을 드러내는 방식과 맞닿아 있다. 이렇듯 대상에 내포된 질서에 질문을 던지며 그리기의 과정을 공정화한 그의 회화는 완결성과 순수성을 밀어내고 구조적 질서로부터 출현하는 동시대적 회화를 추동한다.

Defragmentation presents new paintings by Kwon Sejin in which candle flames and smoke, drawn from photographs collected at random on Pinterest, are translated square by square onto standardized sheets of paper in meok (Indian ink). The premise is straightforward and the constraints are severe. A subject that resists being held in place, burning, dispersing, vanishing, is fed into a system of rules that fixes the size of the paper, the size of the grid within it, and the order in which the parts are made. Kwon's painting is an inquiry into how an image takes shape under such conditions: under the physical and environmental terms of facing the subject, and under the strict procedures that follow from them. Those procedures sit close to Georges Bataille's informe. The aim is not to render candle and smoke as images of something, whether spirit, mortality, or the residue of a flame, but to dismantle the symbolic charge those subjects carry and lay bare the operational forces moving beneath them. Treating the act of painting as a procedure rather than a passage of feeling, Kwon pushes against ideals of completeness and purity, and toward a contemporary painting whose forms emerge from structural order.
