Over ten months in 2025–26, Pacific traveled to five cities across Africa with the African Film and Media Arts Collective ( @a.f.m.a.c ) documenting the organization's work with local partners and directing a series of social films. In each city — Lagos, Tangier, Nairobi, Dakar, and Cape Town — we collaborated with local photographers to capture the creative communities and daily life of the places they call home.

In Dakar, we had the privilege of working with photographer and artist Djibril Dramé. Djibril's practice is rooted in the spiritual ethos of the Baye Fall Sufi brotherhood, weaving poetic and politically engaged approaches to cultural memory with contemporary African aesthetics. Seeing Dakar through his lens was unforgettable.

We'll be sharing photos from all five cities in the coming week. AFMAC is a platform championing African filmmakers, media artists, and cultural visionaries across the continent and diaspora. Pacific is honored to work alongside Julie Mehretu, Mehret Mandefro, and @bmwgroupculture on this vital initiative.

Next week, ‘Inheriting the Future’ opens at October Gallery, bringing together works by Djibril Dramé, Alexis Peskine, Zana Masombuka and Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga.

The exhibition introduces photographic works by Djibril Dramé, whose practice weaves poetic and philosophically engaged reflections on cultural memory with contemporary African aesthetics. Through these portraits, he explores the inner beauty and layered identity of the Baye Fall Sufi Brotherhood, in which service to others is understood as a form of spiritual devotion.

SEEING OTHERWISE

Seeing Otherwise brings together interlinked exhibitions unfolding across Cape Town, South Africa and Lagos, Nigeria. Conceived as a single structure expressed across two cities, each site approaches photography as a practice of crossing rather than a medium of capture. In the hands of Kelani Abass, Delali Ayivi, Nuits Balnéaires, Djibril Drame, Yagazie Emezi, and Sharon Walters, images do not resolve into evidence; they are worked, layered, and re-situated to operate as passages between the visible and the sensed. What binds each practice is a shared attention to spiritual–material entanglement: an understanding that images are not inert surfaces, and that belief is never detached from the gestures and environments through which it moves.

Our group exhibition Seeing Otherwise opens tonight in Cape Town❕🌀The exhibition brings together interlinked exhibitions across Cape Town and Lagos. The show in Cape Town features Djibril Drame, Yagazie Emezi and Delali Ayivi.

Djibril Dramé is a Senegalese multidisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in the spiritual ethos of the Baye Fall Sufi brotherhood. His work weaves poetic and politically engaged approaches to cultural memory with contemporary African aesthetics. We are presenting two works from his critically acclaimed ‘Forgotten Icons’ series which celebrates two women Senegalese artists — traditional singer Yande Codou Sene and tassukat Aby Gana Diop. Both women represent a radical shift from the norm in Senegalese music, redefining genres and creating reverbrating impact through their art.
