John Francom started designing guitars as a hobby in 2017, motivated to create an instrument that allows him to play both bass and guitar parts in his 3 piece band Telephant Graveyard. Struggling to find what he was looking for at an affordable price, John took it upon himself to build it. Refining his designs with time, he eventually incorporated instrument building into his Master’s thesis “Improving Teaching Practice Through the Cross-Disciplinary Pairing of Mathematics and Music”. He strays from tradition and favours unusual and innovative designs, and enjoys discovering what new problems they create. John’s quest will only stop when he has created the perfect instrument for himself, but doubts that will ever be attained “in this lifetime”.
