Vingt-cinq ans les séparent, mais Jean Arp et François Stahly ont trouvé tous deux dans la sculpture un langage inédit. Celui qui leur permit de matérialiser leurs visions du rôle d’un artiste dans la grande harmonie de la nature. La fondation arp consacre pour la première fois sa nouvelle exposition au dialogue entre deux grands maîtres qui placèrent la nature au centre de leur sculpture, à travers une cinquantaine d’œuvres, documents et photographies. Comment rapprocher deux personnalités autour d’un thème aussi vaste - et pourtant central de l’histoire de l’art - que celui de la nature ? Quels sont les chemins qui les en rapprochent ? Quels sont ceux où leurs points de vue s’éloignent ? L’exposition n’aura pas pour but de les comparer, mais de faire dialoguer sur plusieurs sujets ces deux poètes de la sculpture. Le parcours de l’exposition débutera par la découverte de la manière dont Arp (1886-1966), comme plus tard Stahly (1911-2006), trouvent dans l’observation de la nature une image très organique. Plantes, pousses, et torses croissent et se répondent, en gardant toujours l’aléatoire et le vivant comme base de l’expression des artistes. Dans un dialogue de creux et de courbes, leurs œuvres s’animent d’un souffle biomorphique. Une section sera consacrée à la liberté que chacun s’offrait de réinventer la nature. Au lieu de se plier à ses lignes, ce sont cette fois leurs regards qui s’imposent à elle, donnant à certaines fontaines, forêts ou éléments végétaux un caractère plus marqué pour chacun des artistes, amenant ainsi des voies de dissemblance entre Arp et Stahly. Le chapitre suivant de l’exposition mettra en lumière la manière dont chacun a pu enfin donner à la nature une silhouette architecturale. Idées nouvelles dont les lignes sont bien plus construites, l’abstraction de cette nature se développe ainsi de façon plus géométrique, marquant une différence affirmée entre leurs œuvres. La Fondation Arp sera exceptionnellement fermée au public le vendredi 1er mai.
Elle sera en revanche ouverte à la visite les samedi 2 et dimanche 3 main !

FRANÇOIS MORELLET / SOPHIE TAEUBER-ARP • Join us next week for the opening of “Au hasard”, a duo show of François Morellet and Sophie Taeuber-Arp. Curated by Christian Alandete, the exhibition will open on April 9 at 47 rue Saint-André-des-Arts and will run through May 30, 2026.

The exhibition brings together two major figures of geometric abstraction, separated by a generation but united by the same desire to reconcile rigor and playfulness. For both Sophie Taeuber-Arp and François Morellet, form arises from the tension between order and chance.
An heir to the Dadaist spirit, Morellet borrows from Taeuber-Arp the notion of chance as a structuring principle, transforming the unexpected into method. Both develop protocols in which randomness becomes a measurable variable, integrated into the composition of serial systems, grids, and modular variations. The exhibition highlights this intellectual and artistic lineage.

This exhibition is part of 100 x Morellet, an event organized to mark the centenary of François Morellet’s birth, at the initiative of the Fonds de dotation @francois.morellet and the @centrepompidou.

This exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Fondation Arp-Taeuber, Clamart.

For the third edition of @matterandshape we, at Atelier Toporkoff, have had the amazing chance to work with @fondationarp on the creation of « AUBETTE PV001AUBETTE PV001 ».

We developed this stained glass screen from three Sophie Taeuber-Arp artworks: Composition verticale horizontale (1916), Aubette 199 (1927), and Aubette 200 (1927).

We made it in Paris, out of French mouth-blown colored glass from @verreriedesaintjust and included some gold leaf application. The lead was assembled using traditional techniques, and the soldering has been made out of tin. The metal frame, made out of brushed steel with a patinated finish, has been developed with @acdc_aucoeurdeschoses in Montreuil. A huge BRAVO to @fanny.grandry and to Loïc for your massive and fantastic work.
