In the third episode of Conceptual Disco, we look at the art of sampling in early house and techno and how producers reused fragments of disco, soul, and gospel records to build something entirely new. Using the Acapella Anonymous series as a case study, we explore how these isolated voices and grooves became the building blocks of underground dance music. Featuring a guest set by @_alldave

In the second episode of Conceptual Disco, we turn to Berlin in the 1990s, where Tresor emerged as a meeting point for a divided city and a new home for Detroit’s techno spirit. Featuring sets by @sklasi.dj and @melferdi , we trace how an abandoned vault became a cultural engine; shaping the sound of Berlin and showing how techno could build bridges across borders.

For the 61st edition of the Set the Mood series, we welcome Flunk, who shares his vision on what makes a great opening set. To him, a proper warm-up should be easy to approach but layered with complexity. It should tease the night ahead, not take it over, offering just a taste of the energy, depth, and release still to come. Think subtle pressure, hidden funk, and a quiet hint of Detroit 🌃
Based in The Hague, Flunk draws from the early days of techno and house, when spirituality and imperfection gave the music its soul. Influenced by his father’s rich DJ legacy, he blends classic sounds with a modern touch, always searching for the gems that shaped today’s electronic landscape🎶
Enjoy!

Exited to announce I’ve hosted the first episode of Conceptual Disco at @pipradio !
Conceptual Disco is a show that revives the energy of early underground dance music. When DJ’s were pushing the limits and the music was unpolished and full of life. Not meant as nostalgia, but rather a reinterpretation of the energy that has defined underground dance music: dynamic, intense and rough around the edges. It will be a show for music that does not fit into ordered categories, but rather for music that captures that raw and untimed spirit, whether old or new.
Alongside DJ sets, the show also takes moments to reflect — on the cultural, musical, and historical undercurrents of the music. It’s a space for sound that resists clean categories, and for stories that remind us why this music still matters.
In the first episode, I explore how techno emerged in 1980s Detroit as a form of quiet, resilient resistance to social and economic neglect. Featuring an exclusive set by DJ Draft (@robertvoerknecht ), we dive into the raw energy of a movement that, with minimal resources, built its own network and culture sending a powerful message through sound.

Flunk is a DJ based in the Hague that takes you back to the time when techno and house was first gaining traction, when religion and spirituality were still heavily intertwined with electronic music, when the analogue synths broke down once in a while, and when the vocals were barely in tune.
Inspired by his father’s ever-growing music collection and professional DJ career, Flunk blends techno and classic house with a modern twist, with a special focus on finding the hidden (and not-so-hidden ) gems that shaped modern-day electronic music.
