La vestimenta masculina, desde su invención, otorgaba mayor libertad de movimiento, permitiendo a los hombres desplazarse con mayor facilidad y, por lo tanto, ser más libre que la mujer.
A fines del siglo XVIII, en Francia, se consolidaron decretos que prohibían a las mujeres vestir como hombres, justamente para evitar la igualdad. Estas ordenanzas fueron impulsadas por reyes, Padres de la Iglesia y distintos revolucionarios.
Como cita Moreira Bravo (2021) retomando a Alain Decaux, la Revolución tenía un antifeminismo militante: los burgueses en el poder se escandalizaban ante la idea de una igualdad política entre ellos y sus esposas, destinadas al hogar.
