Three races into the English Fell Running Championships and one thing already feels obvious:

The standard is brutal.

Many runners winning local races across Britain would struggle to make the top 50 here.

That’s not disrespect to local racing. It’s just the reality of the depth, consistency and relentlessness of the English Champs.

Finlay Grant has opened the season with three straight wins.
Ben Rothery remains firmly in contention despite only racing two counters.
Caroline Lambert has looked dominant.
And behind them sits a huge layer of elite club runners, mountain specialists and experienced vets all fighting for places rather than podiums.

But this isn’t just about results.

It’s about what the Championships still represent within British off-road running:
different terrain,
different weather,
different demands,
six races,
nowhere to hide.

We spoke to runners including Sara Willhoit, Karl Gray and Mark “Goldie” McGoldrick about why the series still matters — and why many still see it as the gold standard proving ground in British mountain running.

Everyone’s talking about the young talents lighting up the MSWS scene - @fingrant456 and @tom___spencer - so here they are 😂

Truly British, mildly chaotic, and not taking themselves too seriously… this is what happens behind the scenes 🎬🇬🇧

You’ll see why these two are as entertaining as they are fast 🔥

We can’t wait to watch them all season 🤩🥳

@skyrunning Final of Estaban Olivero U23 series.
4th on the day was best i could manage & enough to hang onto 2nd overall in the series as @tom___spencer disappeared off into the mist to clinch the race & overall from me.
@scarpa_uk Spin STs coping brilliantly in the wet muddy conditions provided by @sobrescobioredestrail for a great race to finish the season.
Thanks to @skyrunning for putting on a graat series all year long & @scarpa_uk for their continued support

The Finlay Grant Show

Records fell at last week's Sheldon fell race
@fingrant456 taking specious seconds off the race record which was set before he was born (it might take another +20years before it goes again)
The @scarpa_uk and @dpfellrunners man is on form sitting joint top of this years English fell champs

Great running from everyone on what was a very muggy night down by the river by all accounts (more clips to be shared soon)

Thanks to @sarawillhoit for the extra shots

The third counter in the 2025 English Fell Championship was a shorter distance course at the Kettlewell Anniversary Race. After coming second to Ben Rothery in the first two counters Finlay Grant needed the win. And he got it. Keep an eye out for more Trailfans coverage of the English Fell Champs…..
