TODAY I HELD LETTERS THAT BARBARA TOY WROTE

Hundreds of letters.

The National Library of Scotland houses an archive files containing correspondence between overland legend Barbara Toy and her publisher, John Murray.

I read letters she wrote by typewriter and by hand from hotels around the globe. From Riyadh to Melbourne to Bangkok, she wrote with tales of adventure, updates onweather, her Land Rover Pollyanna, and her next moves.

She also shared serious doubts about her manuscripts, writing, photography, and films.

She was strong, smart, brave, and adventurous. But she was also very real. And for that, I couldn’t admire her more. 🥹

I'm not sure when I became enthralled with the history of vehicle-based travel and the role of women within it. As always, I was probably irritated with the lack of female representation in the North American overland world and decided to enrol in The Traveling Sisterhood course by Amy Gigi Alexander. One thing led to another, and I discovered Barbara Toy.

Eager to read her travelogues, I took to the internet to find them. Only one, Travelling the Incense Route, remains in print today. Copies of the rest are nearly impossible to find or cost several hundred dollars. This woman was an overland pioneer, Vice President of the Land Rover Registry for a time, and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Enthusiasts obsessed with her Rover Pollyanna have gone to great lengths to preserve the vehicle, restore it, and ensure it attends regular shows.

But what about Toy's works? What about her collection of photos? Where are they?

The purpose of this project is to preserve the legacy and stories of Barbara Toy, including:

📚 Collecting original copies of Barbara Toy's nine books.

📷 Tracking down her photo collection.

📖 Bringing Toy's books back into print for the public to access and enjoy.

Tomorrow I’ll join Tom Pickford, Bill Cooper, Greg Fitzgerald, and Laura Stacey to retrace a section of Barbara Toy’s 1957 route across America in none other than the iconic Pollyanna with Barbara’s book “Columbus Was Right” as our guide.

From there, we’ll stage up at the @texasrovers SCARR event for the 10th annual Barbara toy Tribute run.

…. And who appeared when we arrived …?! A pic of our dad on a poster! That was really emotional for both my bro and I.

We wouldn’t be here with Pollyanna if it wasn’t for dad who has been her mechanic since 1989 shortly after Barbara found Pollyanna again.

Our parents are not great on tech so dad unfortunately hasn’t really been a part of this journey, but there will be lots of stories told on our return in the coming days! ☺️
