Antwerp is the birthplace of A Magazine Curated By. Its very unique free spirit and unconventional tone continue to guide us today. I recently spoke with Modern Weekly China around ‘The Six’ exhibition in Antwerp, thank you to Mark Liu for the invitation and for such a thoughtful conversation.

A great opportunity to reflect on our roots and on Walter Van Beirendonck’s original vision for our magazine more than 25 years : giving Antwerp designers a space that is truly theirs. Not only a magazine about them, but something they can shape themselves to express themselves fully.

That spirit is still there, beyond Antwerp — with curators like Yohji Yamamoto, Thom Browne or Grace Wales Bonner, to name a few, there’s still this same approach: letting each creative bring their own world.

If I had to put words on it, I’d probably call it a kind of radical generosity. Not in a grand way, but in how ideas are shared, how processes are opened up, how nothing feels too precious or closed off. Like the 6 of Antwerp a rigorous thinking wrapped in playfulness. Exactly who we are!

The Six!!
A Magazine Curated By is deeply rooted in the legacy of the Antwerp Six.
 
In the mid-1980s, six young graduates of Antwerp's Royal Academy of Fine Arts loaded up a rented van and drove to London to show the world what they had made. The press couldn't pronounce their names — so they became the Antwerp Six. Walter Van Beirendonck, Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Van Saene, Dirk Bikkembergs, Marina Yee. A generation that changed fashion forever.
 
Fifteen years later, in 2000, Walter Van Beirendonck initiated something new — a magazine unlike any other. Not a publication about fashion, but one made *by* a designer, for their community. A vessel for vision, passion, and authenticity for all. The first issue featured fellow Six member Dirk Van Saene. A Magazine Curated By was born.
 
25 years on, across 34 issues, that spirit lives on, shaping A Magazine Curated By into one of the more distinctive voices in fashion publishing, with curators ranging from Martin Margiela and Yohji Yamamoto to Iris van Herpen, Glenn Martens and Willy Chavarria.
 
As Publisher I carry this forward every day, proud of what it stands for and committed to keeping it a space where designers and brands can be heard, in full, on their own terms.
