#100daysofpractice day 96. 5 - 7 metric modulations with Jacob Collier, over If I Were a Bell.

Way back on day 59, @jacobcollier and I did a Paris - NYC session over @farplayapp, and we improvised this version of If I Were a Bell where we alternate between 5/4 and 7/4 while keeping the bar length the same.

At the time, we shared only the out-of-time coda that came after this, because it felt particularly magical. But now, continuing yesterday’s theme of metric modulation, here’s what came before.

I’m still amazed that we were able to do something this rhythmically intricate 3500 miles (5600 km) apart. We had about 45 ms of latency on @farplayapp, equivalent to playing with someone 45 ft (15 m) away from you in a room, which is noticeable but subtle: it just feels like the other person is laying back a bit on the beat. That we were able to do this is also a testament to Jacob’s rhythmic clarity.

Any questions? Have you tried @farplayapp?

#100daysofpractice day 94. Reading figured bass with Emi Ferguson.

Another from the @farplayapp session yesterday with @emiferguson: 18th-century composer Bonporti’s Invention in C minor, which only exists in figured bass form — meaning there’s only a melody, a bass line, and chord symbols. So I’m improvising the piano part here, which I’ll be playing on clavichord this summer at the @oregonbachfestival with Emi playing baroque flute.

This is such a great repertoire choice from Emi: since the composition simply doesn’t include that much information, freedom is built in.

#100daysofpractice day 93. FarPlay practice Brooklyn - Millerton with @emiferguson.

I’ve known Emi Ferguson for a few years now, and one of the things that always impresses me, aside from her great musicianship, is her openness to new ideas.

In our projects together, we’ve focused on baroque music, but today we tried something new: total free improvisation, 100 miles apart, using @farplayapp. Maybe we’ll bring a little of this to our clavichord-flute concerts this summer at @oregonbachfestival, who knows?

Kenny Dorham's Blue Bossa across 2900 miles

The musicians are spread across 2900 miles, but the lilting bossa groove and harmonica's yearning melody just fit. Ben Lewis (piano, Chicago), Jean-Luc Landry (guitar, Montreal), Greg (harmonica, Playa Del Ray, CA), Tim Green (bass, Meridian, ID), Doug Percell (drums, Orange County, CA) perform Kenny Dorham's "Blue Bossa" in one of Ben Lewis's recent Open Sessions on FarPlay Meet, our new platform that lets you connect with the wider community of FarPlay users, free to all subscribers. I am so grateful to the university of Miami Department of Laryngology who trusts me to work with singers that have suffered voice injury or illness. They do their amazing part and then send them to me so that I can help them reclaim their singing voices. Kristen is one of my favorite clients to coach, and I love the work I get to do with singers recovering from vocal fold injuries and voice dysfunction. So grateful for the opportunity to be a part of their growth and health. And a special shout out to the FarPlay platform for creating a way for us to do lessons remotely with very low latency sound! @farplayapp #vocalhealth #singingvoicerehab @julesgerhard14 @lowlatencyaudio @umiamimedicine @umiamislp #umiamihealth

Spiking latency? Try this simple setting in FarPlay for Windows.

Is latency spiking even after connecting by Ethernet with Wi-Fi off at both ends? If you're on a Windows PC using Windows Audio (not ASIO), go to FarPlay's Preferences and change the Audio Buffer Size to 480. For details, see our blog (link in bio)

#100daysofpractice day 59. FarPlay practice Paris - NY with @jacobcollier.

I’ve known the crazy brilliant Jacob for a few years, and with him in NYC and me in Paris, we decided to try playing together for the first time, 3500 miles apart, using @farplayapp.

We started with a version of If I Were A Bell where we change meters between 5/4 and 7/4 every 8 bars, keeping the bar length the same (amazingly, this actually worked despite 45ms of latency at this distance, equivalent to playing with someone 45ft / 15m away from you in a room).

Then, spontaneously, we free-improvised the coda you hear here, which keeps returning to the idea of bells ringing.

I love it when improvisation turns into genuine exploration, which it can if, like Jacob, you have patience and big ears. That’s when the magic happens, in the listening.
