After 12 amazing years, Taylor will be transitioning from East Yard. We're grateful for all the incredible work they have led and supported in fighting for justice in our communities. While this chapter comes to a close, Taylor's legacy will continue on for years to come. Their last day at East Yard will be on August 1st. 🖤

East Yard is celebrating 25 years of community resistance and movement-building. Our annual Fighting for Life Celebration uplifts the work of our members and the organization in advancing environmental justice in the region and beyond. We also honor and recognize partners from all sectors of the movement who have helped conspire to bring healthier, more breathable, livable communities for frontline residents.

This year, we will be honoring two incredible champions of environmental justice: Molly Greenberg and Bill Moyer. Their dedication inspires us all to make a difference.

In the past year, we have been faced with and resisted environmental rollbacks, community isolation and violence, and threats to funding. We have met these challenges by creating safe spaces, continuing our education and advocacy work, all while growing our community base that needs a larger, more effective home.

Our Fighting for Life Celebration continues to focus on fundraising for our Community Action and Resilient Environment (CARE) center, which will help meet community needs as a resilience center and organizing space.

So join us on August 1 to share an unforgettable evening of tasty food, lively music, and the joy of coming together. Let’s take this opportunity to uplift one another and celebrate our shared mission.

Visit our website, www.eycej.org to learn more about sponsorship, advertising, and ticket opportunities.

We can’t wait to celebrate with you!

Hello everyone! This Thursday, June 11, is our monthly tenants' rights workshop. If you have questions about your housing, use this link to register: bit.ly/SELA_KYR
👉 It is important for everyone to attend this workshop—why?
Because we need to know what to do when the landlord tries to evict us, harasses us, fails to make repairs, or keeps the security deposit.
Landlords HATE it when we know our rights.

*************************

Stories move people, and sometimes toward each other. 🤝

Organizer Paola Vargas of @eycej writes about traveling from Long Beach to Barstow, standing with her family at a planning commission hearing, and what it means to show up for communities connected by the same freight system.

The project got approved. But that's not the whole story (nor the end of it!).

EAST LA OIL SPILL UPDATE: We have been extremely concerned about residents being impacted by toxic vapors coming from the crude oil in storm drains between the spill site and the LA River. We have been pushing for transparency so impacted residents know their proximity to the storm drains and the status of the cleanup. The initial plan from the “Unified Command” was just to inform residents as the cleanup progressed by their houses, but now we have access to this tool for all of us to input our address so we can see how close the contaminated storm drains are to our homes, schools, businesses, etc. as well as the progress of the cleanup. Community organizing works y’all!! Please see the link in our bio for the interactive map and share widely!

Thank you to everyone that applied pressure, provided insightful comments, and demanded more! The South Gate City Council will be giving more time to this important item, which means more opportunity for community engagement, recommendations, and accountability. Sometimes it can feel like we are a lone voice trying to bring reason to the table, but when many voices join we become undeniable.

Last month we went to support the Rent control (RSO) that our community won a hard-fought battle for. But instead of accepting this community decision, Maywood landlords are organizing to overturn what we fought for.

After our community meeting, they ambushed us and telling us "Landlords work hard too." But we aren't intimidated and they're missing the point:

Landlords chose to invest in property, they make profits while we struggle
Tenants have no choice but to pay rent or become homeless
Tenants face constant displacement and insecurity especially during these times of heavy ICE presence in our community.

Rent control is about basic fairness. It's about preventing displacement and keeping our community intact.

Rent control is about basic fairness. It's about preventing displacement and keeping our community intact.

Thank you to everyone who came out tonight to spend time with the Paayme Paxaayt (west river, LA River) in community against the East LA Oil Spill and especially to @comradeannie17 for lighting the spark to bring us all together! One of the many things shared and learned came from @lruuiz who let everyone know what’s going down in South Gate tomorrow regarding public land used for an oil pipeline. Swipe the slides to learn more and take action.
