After a month off, Duo Tutti return to Exeter Library this Friday at 10:30am, and if you've got little ones, this is a lovely way to spend a Friday morning.

Their concerts are full of live classical music, movement, and activities young children love getting involved in. It's free, and there's no need to book.

They'll be here every last Friday of the month at 10:30am from now on. See you there! ❤️

We have an update on our Author Talk with Johnny Mains! The evening had been postponed but we have a new date 😁

Johnny will now be joining us at Exeter Library on Thursday 9 July at 6:30pm to talk about his new British Library collection, The Dead of Summer. The book draws on the dark folklore and superstitions surrounding Midsummer, Walpurgis Night, and May Day Eve.

Gandy Street is getting its first-ever First Thursdays on 4th June ☺

From 5pm, InExeteris activating the street with live music, street food, late-night shopping and general good vibes 🎶🎺🛍🌯🍸

And we'll be right here as part of it. Exeter Library is open until 7pm on Thursdays (and Tuesdays too!), and on 4th June we're adding something a little special: acoustic live music in the foyer from 5.30pm.

Whether you're heading out to Gandy Street or just looking for somewhere calm and welcoming to settle for a bit, the doors are open. Come in, sit down, browse the shelves, play a board game, meet a friend. You're welcome to bring your own food and drink too. Free, no booking needed, no fuss.

A reminder that the NOT Dead Poets Society meets next week at Exeter Library! 📚

If you haven't heard about it yet: it's a free monthly poetry book club in the Rougemont Room, 5.30–6.30pm, on the last Tuesday of each month. Each session focuses on two contemporary poets, with space to listen, chat, and share your thoughts. No prep needed, no books to buy.

It's led by Chris from Spork! Poetry (and Exeter Library!) and it's open to everyone, whether you read poetry regularly or you've never really given it a go before. There are biscuits. That's not a small thing 🍪

George Sansome and Sophie Crawford, founders of Queer Folk, are bringing their new album to life in the library, sharing LGBTQIA+ folk songs rescued from the archives and given the stage they deserve. Support comes from Seaweed in the Fruitlocker, a brilliant queer sea shanty choir whose name alone deserves a round of applause.

Doors at 7.30pm, music from 8pm. And there's a bar ☺

I am proud to reveal this new sculpture for @exeter.library, which I have been busy working on over the past few weeks! This work was commissioned by @movingpartsarts for the Afterlives Festival, a new festival exploring conversations around death, dying and bereavement. The installation was completed this weekend with contributions from workshop participants - watch to the end to see their work! More information about the project below 👇🏻🦋

🦋 ‘PSYCHE’ Immortelle 🦋

In Victorian times, people would place beautiful glass domes on graves, filled with precious objects, symbols and treasures to honour and remember their loved ones. Known as an ‘immortelle’, this tradition is coming back to life. Newcastle-based Moving Parts Arts has worked with Devon-based artist & puppet maker Sarah Vigars to create a stunning new artwork for Exeter Library inspired by this forgotten custom. Entitled ‘Psyche’, Sarah’s immortelle is inspired by Devon’s butterflies! In Ancient Greek, the word ‘Psyche’ translates as both ‘butterfly and ‘soul’ or ‘spirit’. The transformation of a butterfly bursting from its chrysalis therefore became a potent symbol of life and death, representing the human soul as it leaves its mortal body.

Workshops to create smaller ‘Psyche’ butterfly from paper and wire were facilitated by Sarah Vigars and Charlie Scullion. Participants were able reflect on and commemorate the memories of loved ones, past or living, through gentle hands-on craft. The plinth of the dome was created by carpenter Luke Jones.

Today we hosted our second Afterlives Festival “Seat at the Table” gathering at Exeter Library, and what a lovely afternoon it was.

Over food and conversation, people came together for gentle discussions about death, rituals, remembrance, topics we don’t often make space for. These conversations can be difficult to start, but gathering around a table brought warmth, ease, and a sense of connection that made sharing feel natural.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us and shared so thoughtfully ❤️

We will be hosting our finalSeat at The Table at Redbridge Library, London (6 June) as part of the continuing Afterlives Festival.
